The Top 300 Selling Comics For May 2002

1 TRANSFORMERS GENERATION ONE #2 115,655

STILL the best-selling comic with its second issue? I'll bet Marvel is kicking themselves for giving up the rights now. Too bad I don't give a damn, since I didn't give a flying walrus's ass about the Transformers back in the 80's.

2 NEW X-MEN #126 103,189

Grant Morrison continues to blow me away with this comic every month. At least once an issue he casually tosses something in that is both mind-blowing and perceptive. This is how the X-Men should be, big events with on-the-fly characterization that makes you care about the characters in the book. Highly Recommended.

3 ULTIMATES #5 102,524

Like most of the Ultimate books, it's well done but horribly slow, taking a LOT of issues to get the stories going. Recommended, but by now I would prolly suggest people just get the trade paperbacks of these books unless they desperately need to read them the day they come out.

4 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #41 (RES) 97,947

This would be a great book if it came out on time. The creative team is doing good work, but it is a continued type of book with cliffhangers, and you can't sustain that when it is 2 or 3 months between issues. And now Kevin Smith is going to be writing it? He was late with Green Arrow and they didn't even start soliciting that until he had six issues already done. I LIKE having new people from other media writing comics, but don't put them on regular series. Have them do mini-series that you don't ship until the last issue is drawn and in the editor's hands.

5 ULTIMATE X-MEN #18 94,143

Drawn out stories and bad art. Pass.

6 UNCANNY X-MEN #406 91,356

Joe Casey is leaving this book with 410, and it's sadly not soon enough. Morrison's X-Book is an amazing joyride with thrills and spectacle and this one just sort of chugs along like the X-Books of 4 years ago, events going on in stories too dull to care about. Pass.

7 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #22 (Note Price) 90,905

A double sized issue with the return of the Green Goblin. You can find out nothing more from me other than it was GREAT if you like Super-hero stuff at all. Bendis shows that you CAN do older-type stories without them feeling like the same old thing, and gives the story a genuine feel of menace. Highly Recommended.

8 SPIDER-MAN BLUE #1 (Of 6) 79,108

A mini-series by the team who did the Batman Holiday minis and Daredevil Yellow. This will be good as well if their past work is any indication, but it will actually be cheaper when collected into a trade paperback, so just wait about 8 months and buy it that way.

9 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN SPECIAL #1 77,370

Another Bendis Spider-Man story. I can recommend it sight unseen, since he has yet to write a story with the character that I don't love. Highly Recommended.

10 GI JOE #6 71,692

*yawns* Wake me when the 80's revival gets around to Buckaroo Banzai.

11 X-TREME X-MEN #13 69,741

Chris Claremont showing us all why he isn't writing the main X-Men books anymore.

12 GREEN ARROW #15 69,356

Kevin Smith's last issue, so it will be about 3 months late. And worth reading, but late nonetheless.

13 WOLVERINE #176 69,061
14 CAPTAIN AMERICA #2 67,348

This is the second issue of the new series through Marvel Knights that is pretty much ignoring everything that came before. And I don't mind. Much like The Hulk, it's clearing away all the crap and just working on telling stories that haven't been tried with the character before.

15 JLA #66 60,581

Interest...waning...due...to...bland...stories...

16 SPIDER-MAN PETER PARKER #44 54,223

The unsung hero of the Spider-Man line. The other books are radical re-workings of the character in some way, but Paul Jenkins does solid stories that keep the past without being a slave to it. The two part fill-in story about Sandman on MTV (OK, it was better than it sounds) was a nice break, but I am looking forward to Jenkins returning to the book.

17 AVENGERS #54 52,874

So, Kang has destroyed Washington DC and taken over the world and not a single other Marvel books reflects this? I hope they don't go for the "fix it with time travel" cop-out, but I smell it coming. Busiek seems to be trying to fit everything in way too fast in his last issues, and the story is suffering for it.

18 BATMAN #603 51,898
19 DETECTIVE COMICS #770 49,339

Bruce Wayne: Fugitive has helped both of these books in sales, which is too bad. They were both better before this story, and it is getting dragged out in ways I don't care for as a reader with issues that say they tie in but don't move the story forward, not much focus on the main story in either book and the feel of "an event" without stories that are eventful. It's a shame too, because the Batman books had become something I recommended every month. Now I have to say buy them if you are hooked, but they aren't worth looking for.

First Quick Aside:

I find it interesting that by the time you get to the 20th best selling comic, you are selling less that half of the number one comic. Does that mean people who buy the top 5 or so, buy nothing else, or are overall sales so bad that shop owners are putting all their money into the Big books?

20 DAREDEVIL #33 47,227

Daredevil is going into uncharted waters, and without spilling the story, Bendis has turned the book on its head in a way that even if you were expecting, you aren't ready for. The art is a bit to "underground" for me, but the story makes up for it. Highly Recommended.

21 WOLVERINE HULK #4 46,210
22 SPIDER-MAN QUALITY OF LIFE #1 (Of 4) 45,821

More mini-series I will read when they are collected. And Wolverine Hulk is by Sam Keith, one of my favorite comics creators, so I'm looking forward to it.

23 INCREDIBLE HULK #40 45,115

After not caring at all about the Hulk when Peter David left, Bruce Jones and John Romita Jr have done something amazing...re-imagined the Hulk without having to start over. Now, the book is back to its core concept, doing interesting stories and making you wonder what is coming next. Pick up the new trade paperback next month to get up to speed if you've been missing out.

24 NIGHTWING #69 43,916

I'm still amazed this book sells so well, since it has been pretty unmemorable for a while. Chuck Dixon is just hacking it out here lately, and the book is marking time until Devin Grayson takes over.

25 FANTASTIC FOUR #55 43,563

Solid, if uneventful, stories, also biding its time for the new creative team with issue #60. But at least it's not just churning out fill-in stories.

26 HAWKMAN #3 42,795

AMAZINGLY good. I have NEVER liked Hawkman, and this series has me hooked. A must for Super-Hero fans, and worth a look by alt comics reader because of the character work and story construction. Highly Recommended.

27 PUNISHER #12 42,359

Ennis is back and not a minute too soon. The other people who worked on the book were tolerable, but showed that for The Punisher to work WELL, the writer needs a certain twisted mindset that only Ennis seems to bring to the table. Highly Recommended.

28 SPAWN #122 42,209

Still being printed. Still not being read by anyone, but bought out of habit and "well, maybe it will get good again." Sorry, it won't get good again because Gaiman and Miller won't ever write it again. Drop it back on the shelf and get a GOOD comic, OK? For me?

29 GREEN LANTERN #150 (Note Price) 42,141
30 JSA #36 41,928

It seems to have dropped in sales, but I have no idea why. Still DC's best super-hero book, and a must read for any super-hero fan. It amazes me how much story then pack into each issue, and how GOOD the story is. Highly recommended.

31 RISING STARS #19 (Of 24) 41,700

Buying it as books. Sorry. The second one STILL Hasn't shipped, so I'm the one who is sorry.

32 X-FORCE #128 41,124

About to be cancelled and started over with a new #1. Which should finally shut up the geeky fanboys who whine that it's not the Robbie Liefeld X-Force. Which, by the way, was a big festering pile of shit that called itself a comic book. This is lightyears better and Highly Recommended to people who don't like super-hero or mutant books.

33 IRON MAN #55 (#400 SPECIAL ISSUE) (Note Price) 40,859

Grell as writer is doing a good job on the book, however, he is being hampered by art that isn't very clear in storytelling and figure work. If you are an art person, prolly leave this one on the shelf.

34 X-FACTOR #2 (Of 4) 40,076
35 X-MEN UNLIMITED #36 39,998

I haven't gotten this book yet, but the editorial group keeps saying that they are going to use this a "showcase" book by bringing in special creative teams to do short stories. At its best, this can be a wonderful way to get people to do great short stories. Too bad the book has felt like "Leftover story dustbin" for the past 5 or so years.

36 MARVEL MANGAVERSE #2 39,292

ANOTHER version of the Marvel universe, this time with Japanese style art. Fun idea, but as a regular series will prolly cause a Crisis on Marvel Earths in about 5 years or so.

37 BIRDS OF PREY #43 38,882
38 SUPERMAN #182 38,327

So this outsells all the other Superman books by about 5,000 copies? Weird. And the Superman books have been a bit annoying in that they are done be decent creative teams that aren't doing very well together. I don't know if its editorial or just that the teams aren't meshing, but I have found that I no longer care about any of the Superman books.

39 EXILES #13 38,306

This is the super-hero book where Judd Winnick's writing really stands out. The premise is confusing, and there is really no way a casual reader can get into it, but if you have been a Marvel fan for a number of years, you'll like this book.

40 ULTIMATE MARVEL TEAM UP #16 37,382

The last issue, and it REALLY underperformed in the Ultimate book line, which is too bad. Bendis was doing good stories of Spider-Man with other heroes and bringing in people who haven't done Marvel books in a long time (or ever). However, I guess that team-up books just aren't thought of as well as they used to be, because they can't "affect normal continuity". *waves his hand* Pish posh. Why should we care, if the story is good, who cares if it ties in with 5 other books?

41 THOR #49 35,721
42 PARADISE X XEN 35,488

The final story in the Earth X series of mini-series. First, if you want to buy it, ask yourself two questions: 1) Do I know the history of the Marvel Universe going back to the early Silver Age? 2) Do I want to buy this in the more expensive monthly format when I can get it collected cheaper and not have to worry about gathering up all the tie-in issues?

43 BATGIRL #28 34,907
44 MIDNIGHT NATION #12 (Of 12) (RES) (Note Price) 34,502
45 BATMAN GOTHAM KNIGHTS #29 33,661

Can someone explain to my why this Batman book sells so far below the others? The stories are just as well done, the Black and White backups are always great, and it does touch on current continuity. Are there cooties on it?

46 STAR WARS EP II ATTACK O/T CLONES #3 (Of 4)* 33,308
47 STAR WARS EP II ATTACK O/T CLONES #4 (Of 4)* 33,168

Movie adaptations confuse me. Why buy them if you can get a DVD of the movie in a year cheaper than buying all four issues of the comic?

48 CAGE #3 (MR) 32,919

Luke Cage in a Mature Readers comic. It might work, but as with all mini-series, I'm waiting for the collected version.

49 ACTION COMICS #791 32,836
50 ALIAS #9 (MR) 32,332

Once again, this book blows me away. I think I have the ending all figured out of the most recent story, and there is a wonderful little coda that blows it all out of the water and gives it a deeper meaning. Older fans were complaining about this book because of the (unseen and implied) sex scene in the first issue. They are missing out on a comic that is something we could have only HOPED Marvel would do 5 years ago. Highly Recommended.

51 ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN #604 32,291
52 DC FIRST BATGIRL JOKER 31,933

This will go for all of the DC Firsts...cool idea, but they all seem to read like leftover stories or halfhearted annuals. If you are going to do these kind of "Event" books, put your top talent on them or just don't bother doing them. For everyone's sake.

53 BLACK WIDOW PALE LITTLE SPIDER #2 (MR) 31,627
54 CATWOMAN #7 31,357

This comic is such a change from the previous series that I am GLAD they started over with a new number one. It, like most of the other Batman books, reads like a crime novel, and that is for the best. Highly recommended, even if you hated that last Catwoman series.

55 SUPERMAN MAN OF STEEL #126 31,331
56 DC FIRST FLASH SUPERMAN 30,039
57 DC FIRST GREEN LANTERN GREEN LANTERN 29,302

Can't some heroes first meet at a bar because they are both there to see Motorhead instead of fighting each other because some bad guy tricked them?

58 MARVEL KNIGHTS DOUBLE SHOT #2 (RES) 29,104

Tell me why this doesn't sell better? The first issue had a GREAT Punisher story by Garth Ennis and this one has an impressive creative team as well with Grant Freaking Morrison writing the main story. Do Americans have a hate for anthology books?

59 SPIDER-MAN TANGLED WEB #14 28,928
60 JUST IMAGINE STAN LEE W/CHRIS BACHALO CREATING CATWOMAN 28,845

The Stan Lee books have been fun, nothing to get all bouncy about, but good solid comics. I wonder if everyone's expectations were way too high, since I read a lot of reviews who take them to task for not being as innovative as The Fantastic Four were in the early 60's. They are fun, solid comics. No more, no less. I would bet if they came out in a normal format without a lot of hype, people would like them more.

61 HOOD #1 (MR) 28,726

Another Marvel Mature comic, but aside for the admittedly cool ads, I know nothing about the book. Which does not bode well for its sales.

62 THUNDERBOLTS #64 28,596
63 ORDER #4 28,502

Dunno how long this will go, but it isn't as fun as The Defenders was. In fact, if I didn't already have the previous issues and was mildly curious about how it would end, I would have dropped it.

64 BATMAN LEGENDS O/T DARK KNIGHT #155 28,502

Mike Baron returns to comics...and while he was the writer behind Nexus and Badger, he also wrote a lot of hackwork like Punisher and Group Larue. This is more like those than it is like Nexus.

65 TOMB RAIDER #22 28,149
66 MORLOCKS #2 (Of 4) 28,082
67 FLASH #186 27,952

I know the creative team can do better than this, since the writer also does JSA, but the book hasn't engaged me to where I really care about the stories for some reason. ONe of my friends says it is the coloring, but I think it has more to do with the fact that after so much character development by Mark Waid, we no longer know anything about Wally West when he isn't the Flash.

68 DC FIRST SUPERMAN LOBO 27,859
69 ROBIN #102 27,620

New writer on the book, and so far so good. The first two issues have been good, and have backed off the endless subplots that Dixon used on the comic.

70 CABLE #105 27,267

So, this is probably why they are cancelling this book and starting it up under a new name. I hate to tell people this, but most of the late 80's, early 90's comics weren't all that good, and many of the characters created at the time were just a cool visual. With writers back at the fore, empty characters that look cool won't work anymore.

71 POWERS #21 (MR) 27,096

Still one of the better books being published, but I'm not as excited about it as I used to be. Is it me, or is the comic losing steam?

72 BLADE #3 (MR) 26,878
73 MARVEL KNIGHTS VOL 2 #3 26,525

The first few pages on the internet got me to buy the book...but it isn't as good as it looked. Maybe it will pick up, but if not, it's on the droplist again.

74 DEADPOOL #67 26,437

Another book Marvel is cancelling and starting over with a new name. And another comic that should have been cancelled when the original writer left, since the book is a pale echo of what it used to be.

75 WITCHBLADE #56 26,432
76 WONDER WOMAN #181 26,048
77 SUPERMAN ALIENS II #1 (Of 4) 26,042

Now, if I remember right, the first one was a huge hit. Think that comics have pretty much run both Aliens and Intercompany team-ups into the ground yet?

78 MUTIES #4 25,907
79 YOUNG JUSTICE #45 25,176

Not a GREAT book, but every month it is a solidly entertaining book. I LIKE Peter David's writing, even though it is filled with Fanboy humor. I think this book would be a bigger hit if there weren't so many little jokes that would leave the target audience (teenagers) scratching their heads.

80 LEGION #8 24,771

The relaunch has helped sales on a book i desperately want to like, but just can't warm up to anymore. Have I outgrown the Legion or is the current team just kind of...bad?

81 HOWARD THE DUCK #5 (MR) 24,729

A mini-series I will buy in collected form. Looks good, tho.

82 STAR WARS JANGO FETT OPEN SEASONS #2 (Of 4) 24,662
83 SPIDER-GIRL #47 24,060

One of Marvel's lost comics...it plays off of the continuity of the Spider-Man clone story without all the suckiness. A comic aimed at a younger audience that should be reaching it, but just doesn't. In a way, I am amazed it lasted this long, but again, it's Highly Recommended for kids and long-time comics fans.

84 AVENGERS ICONS TIGRA #3 24,050
85 JUST A PILGRIM GARDEN OF EDEN #3 (Of 4) 23,966
86 SOJOURN #11 23,868
87 LONE WOLF 2100 #1 (Of 4) 23,577

You would be hard pressed to find a bigger supporter of Lone Wolf and Cub, and this sequel/homage/rip-off just strikes me as a nightmare. What the hell is everyoen involved thinking?

88 TITANS #41 23,152

I buy this comic every month and keep thinking, "Shouldn't it be better?" Not liek it sucks, but...shouldn't it be better?

89 WAY O/T RAT #1 22,835

CrossGen does a martial arts comic. I have read some CrossGen now (in their two big monthly collections) and it might be OK, but since they will be reprinting it cheaper in either Forge of Edge, I'll just buy it there.

90 CAPTAIN MARVEL #32 22,622

A solid, entertaining book for long-time comics fans. If you haven't been reading Pater David's stuff for the past ten years or so, you'll be totally lost.

91 OUT THERE #11 22,083
92 FABLES #1 (MR) 22,026

This is a new Vertigo series by Bill Willingham, who did the Elementals in the 80's. His work since then (and on that, to be honest) has been spotty, since he tends to leave projects undone and half finished. Hopefully, being at DC will make it so we at leas get an end to one of his stories.

93 DEADLINE #2 (Of 4) 21,948
94 HARLEY QUINN #20 21,875

I really can't believe this fun and well-drawn book sells so poorly. No wonder the Dodsons are going to Marvel to work with Kevin Smith. That way some people can SEE their work.

95 TOM STRONG #17 21,693

A wonderfully fun, inventive and well done comic. In a perfect world, this would be selling in the top 10 and is highly recommended.

96 GREEN LANTERN SECRET FILES #3 21,231
97 RUSE #8 21,185

Again, I read this in CrossGen's collected books and liked it a LOT, but with Mark Waid leaving the book, I don't think it will be half as good.

98 PATH #3 20,318
99 MUTANT EARTH #1 (Of 4)* 20,183
100 STAR WARS #42 RITE OF PASSAGE (1 Of 4) 20,121

The movie adaptation is outselling it almost 2 to 1. Maybe this is a signal to Dark Horse that we would buy a Star Wars comic of CHARACTERS WE KNOW FROM THE MOVIES.

101 TASKMASTER #4 (Of 4) 19,970

You know, if this were a DC book, these would be crappy sales figures. I can imagine that at Marvel they are wondering who green-lighted this. I think that if Marvel is going to do mini-series, they need to pick characters people care about or invest in amazing creative teams.

102 RED STAR #9* 19,965
103 TOM STRONGS TERRIFIC TALES #4 19,955

I like this even more than the Regular Tom Strong book, and it has Art Adams art. Highly Recommended, and I would buy Art Adams drawing Rob Liefeld characters...

104 POWER COMPANY #4 19,758

So, Kurt Busiek left The Avengers to do this book. Not exactly on an upward trend there, Kurt.

105 BLACK PANTHER #44 19,571

I keep hearing people tell me that this book is great, but every time I pick it up, the art sucks and the story is undecyperable.

106 SUPERGIRL #70 19,156
107 INFERNO HELLBOUND #3 (RES) 18,844
108 MUTANT X FUTURE SHOCK #1 18,663

I guess no one who buys comics gives a damn about this TV show. I know I havent' ever seen it, but I am too busy working on my website for YOU, my loyan and loving fans.

OK, I didn't believe that either.

109 HELLBLAZER #174 (MR) 18,611

Again, I hopethe new writer remembers that Constantine is a MAGICKIAN and not a leftover from Pulp Fiction. The new story just annoys me to no end, since it is SO out of character for JC.

110 LAB RATS #2 18,351

This is a wake-up call to John Byrne. We know you are just hacking it out and this is an example of doing comics in your sleep. Want to know why Marvel didn't give you the Fantasic Four again? Read this comic you did and you'll understand.

111 SPECTRE #17 18,299

This is not a comic for everyone. It is spiritual, silly, profound and deeply personal, and if you don't like it, I can understand. You are WRONG, but I understand. Recommended for people to at least TRY.

112 DOOM PATROL #8 18,242
113 SUPERBOY #100 (Note Price) 18,180

Last issue of a comic that shoudl have been cancelled when Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett left, since they are the only ones who have made the character interesting and worth reading. I'm sure he'll pop up again, and he seems to work well in Young Justice.

114 HIGH ROADS #2 (Of 6) 18,024
115 JUSTICE LEAGUE ADVENTURES #7 17,453
116 TRANSMETROPOLITAN #56 (MR) 17,080

Another comic limping toward its conclusion. The first 36 issues of htis book were brash, well done and a joy to read. Now, the story has bogged down, has lost the social satire and seems to just be filling time until the big conclusion with issue #60. Would it have been better if it woudl have been a 50 issue seires? Probably.

117 SCION #24 16,950
118 100 BULLETS #36 (MR) 16,950

By the writer of the Hellblazer story I don't like. I dfon't like this book much either, and I like crime stories. Maybe I just don't like ALL crime stories.

119 AMAZING SCREW-ON HEAD 16,908

Can someone tell me why a book that sounds like a cheap black and white parody book is selling this well? Simple. It's by Mike Mignola, who also does Hellboy and is one of the best creators in comics. Why he would do something goofy like this is beyond me.

120 X-MEN EVOLUTION #7 16,747
121 GEN 13 #77 (Note Price) 16,244

Last issue, and I hope someone who can hire comic writers was reading Adam Warren's run on this book. It never went up in sales after so many years or horridly bad stories, but it should have. Warren gave the characters depth without sacrificing the idea that this was a fun, non-traditional super-hero book. I would love to see Adam Warren writing Spider-Man or some other teen super-hero in the future. The book will relaunch with Chris Claremont as the writer, so it's going to be unreadable.

122 BTVS #45 DEATH OF BUFFY (3 Of 3)* 15,979
123 SUICIDE SQUAD #9 15,767
124 LIBERTY MEADOWS #26 15,585

The creator of this comic strip has said he will no longer have it in newspapers, and will instead be doing it ONLY in comic books. I sure hope he has another source of income, because these are not sales that would make me think of chucking it all and working in comic books full-time. A GREAT strip, by the way, and one that shoudl have been in more papers, because it was actually funny.

125 DAWN CONVENTION SKETCHBOOK 2002 (MR) 15,289
126 LADY DEATH GODDESS RETURNS #1 (Of 2) 15,258
127 STEAMPUNK #12 (Note Price) 14,905

Last issue. I liked this book, but with the delays, it was hard to follow since the comic was VERY complex and involved.

128 CRUX #14 14,858
129 MYSTIC #24 14,796
130 LUCIFER #26 (MR) 14,682

If this is Vertigo's new "signature book" I can see that it's time to get a new person signing things.

131 NEGATION #6 14,614
132 AZRAEL AGENT O/T BAT #90 14,563
133 BONE #48 14,542

In the beginning of this comic, it was a great book to give new comics readers because you could pick it up, get a clear story and feel like you had read something cool. Now, you feel like you are picking up a random chapter of a book and only reading the first few pages. Buy it as books and it'll read a lot better.

134 SIMPSONS COMICS #70 14,448

It only comes out every 6 weeks and it's up to 70 issues. And all of them have been funny. You should buy them.

135 FIRST #19 14,236
136 SIGIL #24 14,215
137 GUARDIAN ANGEL #1 (Of 4) 14,163
138 IMPULSE #86 14,007

I'm pretty sure this is the last issue, about 36 issues too late. It all fell apart when Mark Waid left, and no one since has understood the character since. That's a shame, since Impulse was a very fun character that would have been very popular with kids...if they woudl have been going in to comic shops.

139 BATMAN GOTHAM ADVENTURES #50 13,893
140 MERIDIAN #24 13,836
141 CITIZEN V & BATTALLION EVERLASTING #4 13,805

Marvel's worst selling comic. I think that this should show them that comic fans don't much want a Citizen V series.

142 LADY DEATH BEDLAM #1 13,758
143 STRANGERS IN PARADISE VOL III #50 13,561
144 HAVEN BROKEN CITY #6 (Of 9) 13,089

This book started as a spin-off of the JLA and it just doesn't sell. And it's not like people picked up the first issue and dropped it, the book has never sold well. For some reason, people just weren't interested in the idea of an alien city dropped onto the West Coast. We already have LA.

145 HUNTER AGE OF MAGIC #11 (MR) 12,860
146 TENTH NIGHTWALKER #2 (Of 4)* 12,855

It sold a lot better at Image, but that's prolly because Todd MacFarlane clones sold a lot better back then as well.

147 SAVAGE DRAGON #99 12,476
148 DEADMAN #6 12,476

I like this character and I like this book, but it looks like I am the only one.

149 CODENAME KNOCKOUT #13 (MR) 12,248
150 DARKMINDS MACROPOLIS #3 12,238

The company that started this book is also doing Transformers, and that sells a bit better. But a few years ago, this was a monster selling comic because of it's Americanized Manga art. I bought the first graphic novel and liked it well enough, but not enough to look for any more of it. Looks like that was the standard reaction.

151 BART SIMPSON COMICS #8 12,123

Unlike the other Bongo comics, this one bites. It is usually the kind of stories you think of when you think of those crappy comics based on TV shows, with "wacky" stories that are just silly, out-of-character sequences and lazily drawn art. It's too bad, since I think there is a built-in audience for a GOOD Bart Simpson comic.

152 PURGATORI GOD KILLER #1 12,118
153 VAMPIRELLA #9 REG ED 12,009
154 VAMPI #19 REG ED 11,527
155 FUTURAMA COMICS #9 11,490

With FOX being a bunch of pig-loving bastards and not ordering any new eopisodes, it's a GOOD thing that this comic comes out. Futurama is one fo the funniest shows on TV, and if FOX would have treated it decently, it woudl have become as big a hit as The Simpsons.

156 ESTABLISHMENT #9 11,179
157 AMERICAN CENTURY #15 (MR) 10,899
158 DARKCHYLDE LAST ISSUE SPECIAL (Note Price) 10,836

And with sales this low, it's easy to see why.

159 CHASTITY CRAZYTOWN #3 (Of 3) 10,348
160 FUSED #2 10,063
161 MIDNIGHT MASS #2 (Of 8) (MR) 10,001
162 SPYBOY SPECIAL ONE SHOT 9,840

I'm guessing this means that the plan for Relaunching Spyboy isn't exactly a rousing success. From what I hear, more people went to Dark Horse's Spyboy website on a daily basis than bought the comic. Too bad, since it was a book that was silly fun.

163 TAROT WITCH O/T BLACK ROSE #14 9,793

I have mentioned this comic a few times, and will do so again...Jim Balent's stuff on Catwoman was slick and well-done, this has women with still spikes for nipples and more tit shots than an episode of Real Sex on HBO. Ick ick ick. Everytime I look at it I feel like I need a shower.

164 HAUNTED GRAY MATTERS #1 9,290
165 SCI SPY #4 (Of 6) (MR) 9,129
166 POWERPUFF GIRLS #27 8,823
167 INSANE CLOWN POSSE DARK CARNIVAL #1 8,755

OK, this ICP comic won't have a CD single in it. Why are we buying it if it doesn't have a new song?

168 NOBLE CAUSES #3* 8,657
169 CRUSADES #15 (MR) 8,465

While I love this book, I can't imagine it lasting a lot longer with sales this horrible. I would ask you to buy it to save it, but there's no way the readers of this website can raise the sales by 5,000 - 7,000 copies a month. But pick it up when they put it into books and you'll be surprised by how good it is, and how well Kelly Jones's surreal art fits the package.

170 OH MY GODDESS PART XI #10 MYSTERY CHILD (8 Of 8) (Note Price) 8,034
171 USAGI YOJIMBO #57 7,852
172 QUEEN & COUNTRY #8 (MR) 7,406
173 KNIGHTS OF THE DINNER TABLE #67 7,266

Again, like I say every month, if you are a role playing gamer, this is the comic for you. 64+ pages of comics, artciles and letters. The art is horrid, but the humor and "truth" of the stories is just too fun.

174 BLACK TIDE #4* 7,219
175 BLADE O/T IMMORTAL #68 BEASTS (3 Of 7) (MR) 7,063
176 STRAY BULLETS #26 (MR) 7,048

Another one I just buy as collected books, and it is VERY good in that form. I can't really imagine it in 24 page installments.

177 DRAGONBALL Z PART 5 #5 (Of 12) 6,944
178 CEREBUS #278 6,633

It keeps going and going and going...but I think most everyone buys it in book form, since it has become nearly impossible to read as a monthly.

179 DUNGEONS & DRAGONS IN SHADOW OF DRAGONS #8 (Of 8) 6,243
180 SCOOBY-DOO #60 6,238

Now that the movie is coming out, I have a confession. I always hated Scooby Doo. ALWAYS. It was NEVER a ghost, the dog and Shaggy were worthless and the animation was beyond shitty. Why is that horrid little Hanna Barbera crap-pile so popular?

181 KABUKI REFELCTIONS #4 6,098
182 DRAGONBALL PART 4 #10 (Of 10) 5,870
183 CANNON GOD EXAXXION #7 STAGE 1 (7 Of 8) (MR) 5,771
184 BEAUTIFUL KILLER LTD PREVIEW ED #1 5,454
185 SUPER MANGA BLAST #22 (MR) 5,36
1

With Pulp being cancelled, this is the best Manga anthology being published. Dark Horse puts together a good package at a decent price. So, if you already read japanese comics or are wanting to see what they are like, this is the book to try.

186 RANMA 1/2 PART 11 #3 (Of 11) 5,345
187 ENNIS & MCCREAS BIGGER DICKS #4 (Of 4) (MR)* 5,330

You know, I love Garth Ennis, but the first Dicks series was so hard to read due to the phonetic Brit accents in print, I never finished reading it. So I'm not reading this one either.

188 CREEPS #4 (Of 4) 5,299
189 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #111 5,294
190 CREED UTOPIATE #3 (Of 4) 5,294
191 NIGHTMARES & FAIRY TALES #1 5,278

This is the new book by Serena Valentino, who also does the Wonderful Gloomcookie. This is very good too and I highly recommend it.

192 MADMAN PICTURE EXHIBITION #2 5,216
193 POISON ELVES #71 4,982

Jesus , please make the bad man stop making this horrible, horrible comic.

194 ALL NEW TENCHI MUYO PART 1 #1 (Of 7) 4,811

So, since the last book was called No Time For Tenchi, is this one subtitled, "This time we're REALLY out of time for Tenchi"?

195 ROBO DOJO #4 (Of 6) 4,645
196 CARDCAPTOR SAKURA #28 4,448
197 GUNDAM WING ENDLESS WALTZ #3 (Of 5) 4,432
198 GOLD DIGGER #32 4,401
199 NEON GENESIS PART 7 #1 (Of 7) 4,359
200 XIN #1 ALPHA PREVIEW ED 4,302

Do you think they got this list and said "We're number 200! We're number 200!"

201 METABARONS #17 (Of 17) 4,178
202 TICK & ARTIE #1 4,017

If Ben Endlund didn't do it, it's not going to be a good Tick comic. Got it?

203 LOONEY TUNES #90 3,742
204 WARREN ELLIS SCARS SAMPLER (MR) 3,654
205 INU YASHA PART 6 #13 (Of 15) 3,638

This is a Japanese comic I buy in the collected books, and to be honest, I can't even imagine it in the monthly installments. Like most of Rumiko's work, it's funny and charming, but repetitive.

206 ARCHIE #523 3,529
207 BERLIN #9 (MR) (Note Price) 3,405
208 BIG O PART 1 #4 (Of 5) 3,373

No, it's not about what you think.

It's about orgasms.

214 BETTY & VERONICA #176 3,218
215 BETTY & VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST #107 3,072

Archie, you fool. When will you realize that the only one for you is Reggie?

216 BASTARD #6 FIGHTER (1 Of 3) (MR) 3,052
217 BETTY #113 3,052
218 CERES CELESTIAL LEGEND PART 2 #6 (Of 6) 3,052
219 VERONICA #127 3,010

Important Note: There are about 3000 comic shops in America, so if a comic sells below this level, it's not even getting one copy in each store.

220 SHI POISONED PARADISE PREVIEW 2,979
221 AGE OF BRONZE BEHIND SCENES 2,969
222 MUTANT TEXAS TALES OF SHERIFF IDA RED #1 (Of 4) 2,932

225 SLAYERS SPECIAL #5 2,802
226 ARCHIE & FRIENDS #58 2,797
227 SKINWALKER #1 (Of 4) (MR) 2,673

When you come up with a name of your comic, you probably want it to reflect something about the book. Like this comic about when the skin of oranges gathers together and walks at night.

228 CARTOON CARTOONS #11 2,657
229 PALS N GALS DOUBLE DIGEST #67 2,647
230 POUNDED #3 (Of 3) (MR) 2,621

232 ARCHIE DIGEST #190 2,579

If my memory serves me correctly, the item today on Iron Chef is...SQUID GIRL!

240 AKIKO #48 2,335
241 RAGNAROK #4 (Of 4) 2,325

The end of the comic about the end of the world. If it has come out, why are we still here?

242 ARCHIES WEIRD MYSTERIES #21 2,315
243 JUGHEAD #144 2,299

245 WERESLUT #7 (A) 2,206
246 SMILE VOL 4 #6 2,190

Japanese comics anthology aimed at pre-teen girls. No one it seels worse than a novel by Frank Stallone. Maybe if it were in some other venue, it might sell.

247 SLOW NEWS DAY #6 (Of 6) 2,175
248 JUGHEAD W/ARCHIE DIGEST #175 2,117
249 DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN #3 (Of 3) (O/A) 2,097

So, this is the reorder of a comic that was supposed to be about in February, but hasn't shipped yet. Again folks, we have to remember that if you want to be a professional, you have to put books out on TIME!

250 MILK #29 (A) 2,014

OK, furry porn. I bought a couple of issues out of sick curiousity. The only comment I have is:

My eyes! Dear God in heaven, My EYES!!!!

251 YOUNG WITCHES VOL 5 LEGACY #3 (A) 1,988
252 KODOCHA #5 (Of 5) 1,967

257 MY MONKEYS NAME IS JENNIFER #2 1,723

And I once had a girlfriend whose name was Jennifer who could make sounds like a monkey. Most monkeys were a bit more sane than she was. And didn't fling as much poo as she did.

258 STEVEN GRANTS MORTAL SOULS #3 (Of 3) (MR) 1,707

So, Mr. Grant, was signing that exclusive contract with Avatar a good idea? The publishing compnay AT MOST made $2500 off of this book, and counting printing, art, editorial, advertising that leave you with...about a $1.75. But if you exchange it into Canadian money, that might be a couple of bucks.

259 TIGERS OF LUFTWAFFE #8 1,692
260 BITCH IN HEAT #14 (A) 1,687

274 SUPER DOOPER GROOVY SPACE CHICKS #1 1,318
275 INFINITE KUNG FU #2 1,303

Titles like this just confuse me. Is the Kung Fu infinite? Is it a comic that is infinite? And just how to you say that there can me no more Kung Fu than in is this comic?

276 OGENKI CLINIC VOL 9 #2 (A) 1,297
277 DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN #2 (Of 3) 1,277

292 BIG FUNNIES #5 (A) 1,048
293 PLEASURE BOUND #9 (A) 1,012
294 SUPERNATURAL LAW #34 1,007

The lowest selling comic I read. It is a very funny comic about lawyers for monsters and the like, and I'm kind of shocked it doesn't sell a LOT better with all the publicity it gets.

295 ELVIRA #109 991
296 FELIX THE CATS TV EXTRAVAGANZA #1 960

Felix, I hate to break this to you, but you probably have more people who watch you on TV at 3 in the morning than even know this comic exists.

297 LADY DEATH GODDESS RETURNS PREMIUM #1 (Of 2) 950
298 GIANT SHANDA ANIMAL #7 (MR) 934
