The Top 300 Selling Comics for June 2006

Thanks for checking out this column which is a look at sales of Comics where I comment on their sales, if they are any good or whatever other snarky remarks come to mind as I look over the sales figures.

So, what is this list? Every month, Diamond Comics (the company that ships comic books to comic book shops) list the sales figures of the previous month so that they can list actual sales through the entire month, but they list it in the form of “average number of copies sold to each comic shop”. Then, the site www.ICV2.com goes through the numbers they post and attempts to turn it into an approximation of the actual number of books sold.

1 CIVIL WAR #2 (Of 7)* $2.99 MAR 253,856

This is just the initial order, and will probably be a lot higher with reorders, since they dropped the big one here. That's right, Spider-Man revelaed his secret identity, culminating a bunch of subplots that have been running through the Spider-Man books. Civil War is doing a big crossover the right way, by making sure the big events happen in the main book, and the tie-ins give more depth and explanation to the story going on. I have loved this series because it's more than just an excuse to get every comic to put a banner on their cover, but actually deals with a current issue and how people make decisions around it. Highly recommended so far.

2 DCU BRAVE NEW WORLD #1 $1.00 DC 140,844

This is a good idea, just poorly executed. DC has a lot of new series starting up after Infinite Crisis, and this book previews them with a framing story that purports to show that something BIG is starting up again. However, the shortness of the stories made it so I didn't know if they were any good, but it was easy to tell that they were bad, and the framing story was horrible.

3 NEW AVENGERS #21 CW $2.99 MAR 134,278

Civil War is going to change the Avengers book, unless there is a “rabbit out of a hat” ending, since it is breaking down that the team is splitting in two. Rather than rehashing the events in this book, it focuses on a single character and their choice, with some amazingly good art by Howard Chaykin. Again, Civil War has been a good event all around, and this comic is highly recommended.

4 WONDER WOMAN #1* $2.99 DC 132,580

Wonder Woman is re-started, her history has been cleaned up and changed by the events in Infinite Crisis, and this first issue has great art by Terry Dodson. The story is OK, and has a nice twist at the end, but it's more of a set up issue than an actual story issue. Still, the stage is set for this to be a good comic featuring a character I haven't been interested in for a long time. Mildly recommended.

5 NEW AVENGERS #20 $2.99 MAR 125,600

Finishing the “House of M” tie-in, and like a lot of final issues of a long story, this one has a couple of “exposition dumps” where a character explains older stories and cleans up continuity problems. It's too bad the book had to go there, since I have liked this story of a new villain the seems unbeatable. Take out the painfully confusing Magneto stuff and it's a great story, with it, it's just mildly recommended.

6 CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #1 (Of 10) $2.99 MAR 122,057

Most of the time, a “spin off” mini-series like this from a big crossover is just a crap comic that tries to feed off of the big crossover. This book is different, and I like it. A lot. More than Civil War, but you need to read Civil War to know what is going on. This book deals with what is going on around the main story, picks up loose plot threads and has three stories that tell about parts of the main crossover. It's very well done and a perfect companion to Civil War.

7 FLASH FASTEST MAN ALIVE #1* $2.99 DC 120,404

This is quite possibly the most unnessessary relaunch/change a comic has ever seen. IN this issue, the creators have taken Impulse (or Kid Flash, depending on what version of the character you liked), aged him, given him a job much like the previous Flash and changed his PERSONALITY to pretty much the same one as the previous Flash. I wouldn't have minded if the story was any good, but it isn't. A waste of a pair of good characters.

8 ASTONISHING X-MEN #15 $2.99 MAR 119,991

You know sales are good when an X-Men book by Joss Whedon comes in at #8, and hasn't lost many sales from the previous issue. Still a good book, but it's starting to read like Joss REALLY liked those X-Men books of the late 70-'s and wants to write his own version of them. Hopefully there's more to this comic than currently meets the eye, since he's shown he's more talented than just rehashing old stories. Mildly recommended.

9 WOLVERINE ORIGINS #3 $2.99 MAR 116,058

Three issues in, I am of two minds about this comic. I love the story and think that Daniel Way has finally made a Wolverine comic that fits the modern version of the character, dealing with a dirty past and messy situations that cause moral dilemnas, but Steve Dillon's excellent art does not fit the book. His fight scenes are stiff and don't draw the reader in, and when he draws a super-hero constume, it just looks goofy and wrong. He's a great artist, but I don't think he's cut out for spandex stories. Mildly recommended.

10 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #533 CW $2.99 MAR 112,982

The Civil War tie ins have saved this comic. Oh, sure, it was stil selling well, but it had been completely unreadable crap for a couple of years until the Civil War story started heating up in it because it took the focus off of revisionist soap opera crap and made it about Peter Parker and his struggle to make the right decisions, which is where the power of this character has always been. Highly recommended.

11 52 WEEK #5** $2.50 DC 111,895

52 is a different kind of comic, so it's hard to review. First, I'll point out that sales this good for a weekly comic that doesn't have a major character at the center of the story is amazing, and DC is to be commended for trying something new, as well as fans who are willing to pick it up as well. There is a lot of stuff going on in the book, and while it;s all interesting, I just wonder if it will be a book that strings things out fo the year or if it has a bunch of smaller climaxes, like the serial fiction that I enjoy. It's a good comic for super-hero fans who like the idea of a shared universe more than people who want stories with beginnings, middles and ends. Mildly recommended.

12 ALL STAR SUPERMAN #4 $2.99 DC 111,420

I don't think there is a way in the world I could love this comic any more than I already do. You will too. Just go buy it and wallow in the sheer brilliance on display as Superman is made into an interesting character and the stroies are filled with a sense of wonder.

13 52 WEEK #7** $2.50 DC 110,188
14 JUSTICE #6 (Of 12) $3.50 DC 110,188

This was announced as a bi-monthly comic, which means it will take TWO YEARS for the entire story to be out. That's why I decided just to wait and get the whole thing in a single book.

15 52 WEEK #6** $2.50 DC 110,028
16 52 WEEK #8** $2.50 DC 105,107
17 ETERNALS #1 (Of 6) $3.99 MAR 103,217

This is a Neal Gaiman project using Kirby characters from the late 70's. It's weird to see that Neal Gaiman working on obscure Marvel characters can sell so much better than the Sandman comics did back during the boom of the early 90's. Sandman was the first big Trade Paperback success, and I would imagine that it will move a lot of copies in bookstores once it's done. And, since they will probably load up the trade with extras, I'm just going to wait until it's all done.

18 CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #2 (Of 10) $2.99 MAR 102,742
19 WOLVERINE #43 CW $2.99 MAR 97,807

Wolverine is tying off one of the big plot threads of the Civil War story, and while the stories haven't been great, it has great art by Humberto Ramos which can elevate a mediocre story. If you are reading Civil War, it's a must-read, and if you aren't, it's mildly recommended.

20 ULTIMATES 2 #11 $2.99 MAR 96,751
21 SUPERMAN BATMAN #27 (RES) $2.99 DC 95,717

The first issue with a new creative team, with the mind-blowingly good art of Ethan Van Scriber. I didn't care for the last story arc by the previous creative team, but this one has a decent start and has be interested. Mildly recommended.

22 FANTASTIC FOUR #538 CW $2.99 MAR 78,147

While it's not as bad as previous issues before the Civil War tie-ins, it's still not all that good. It does feed into the plot of Civil War, but with each issue, I think that I am losing interest in JMS's vision of the Fantastic Four.

23 UNCANNY X-MEN #474 $2.99 MAR 78,140
24 X-MEN #187 $2.99 MAR 77,918

So, the final issues before new creative teams are probably the lowest selling issues of the X-Men in the last 25 years if not longer. The issues themselves don't work well on their own, so they are pretty much just for people who were reading the runs all along.

25 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #1 $2.99 DC 76,686

The mini-series was a horrible mess, but this first issue is much better, since it pulls the focus from a lot of unknown characters and puts it on Guy Gardner, who can be an interesting character when written correctly. This is a good first issue, has space super-hero adventure and shows a lot of promise. Highly recommended.

26 BATMAN #654 $2.99 DC 76,525

The One Year Later story for Batman (both here and in Detective) has been impressive, wiping away about 15 years worth of bad ideas and poor stories and bringing Batman back to his roots. It's also been a great story, as James Robinson has shown he can write great comics in the past. If you've ever wanted to pick up a good Batman comic and read a great story, this 8 – issue storyline has delivered. Highly recommended.

27 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #96 $2.99 MAR 73,472

The “Morbius” storyline hasn't been as good as some of the other stories this series has seen, but a below average story in this comic is still better than most super-hero stories in other books. This series has had the same wrtier/artist team since inception, and writer Brian Michael Bendis has such a great handle on Spidey that it's always worth reading. Highly recommended.

28 ULTIMATE X-MEN #71 $2.99 MAR 71,314
29 MOON KNIGHT #3 $2.99 MAR 69,446

The return of Moon Knight has probably been the best relaunch of a character at Marvel is YEARS. If it just had the art of David Finch, it would be enough, but the story is doing a great job of bringing back all of the old characters and ideas that were lost over the years, bringing Moon Knight back to its roots. The story is well worth reading, and shows why Moon Knight was such an interesting character in the early 80's, without rehashing old stories. Highly recommended.

30 SUPERMAN #653 $2.99 DC 69,079

This series is crossing over with Action to restore Superman, much like the Batman books are doing. It's nto as good as the Batman story, but it is a very good story that resets the status quo and delivers a readable story at the same time. Mildly recommended.

31 UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #1 $3.99 MAR 68,054

Yet another story trying to convince us that the marriage of Storm and Black Panther is a good idea. It isn't. And this story wasn't worth reading either.

32 DETECTIVE COMICS #820 $2.99 DC 65,988
33 ACTION COMICS #840 $2.99 DC 61,786
34 X-FACTOR #8 CW $2.99 MAR 59,131

Peter David's X-Factor has been a great book. The idea is that a small group of mutants have started a detective agency, but it's more about the characters and their interactions than the premise. This issue deals with Quicksilver and the fallout from House of M better in a single issue than all of the various tie-ins and mini-series have done over the last year. Great dialog and solid storytelling make this comic highly recommended.

35 YOUNG AVENGERS #12 $2.99 MAR 56,246

The last issue for a while, not because of poor sales, but because the writer can't keep anything remotely close to a monthly schedule. It's a shame, really, because this book has been very well done, but it's so complex that most fo the minor points the creative team is able to make get lost when it's two or three monthly between issues. A solid Marvel Super-hero book, but when it comes back, I'll be buying it as collected trades so as not to worry about the delays.

36 ION #3 (Of 12) $2.99 DC 51,739
37 SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #27 $2.99 MAR 50,721

This is one bad comic. The art just doesn't fit a super-hero book and the story holds no interest for me at all, and feels like a bad 70's story updated to be put on sale now.

38 JSA #86 $2.99 DC 50,338

The next to last issue before they rename the book and start it over with #1, this has been a good story to finish off the run. A solid super-hero team book, and while it's by a different writer than the rest of the run, it has kept up the quality and sense of importance that has been this series hallmark. Highly recommend for super-hero team fans.

39 FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #9 $2.99 MAR 50,177

Peter David has only written a few Spider-Man stories, but this new series featuring his writing has shown he is excellent with the character. This issue is part of a bigger story that uses a lot of obscure characters from his Spider-Man 2099 series, but if you can figure out who's who, it's a solid story. Not the best he's done on the book, but still mildly recommended.

40 DAREDEVIL #86 $2.99 MAR 48,280

Yeah, still Marvel's best superhero comic. The story by Ed Brubaker is just as good as the ones by previous writer Brian Michael Bendis, and this comic is highly recommended.

41 THUNDERBOLTS #103 CW $2.99 MAR 48,058

If you want to see how much a Civil War tie-in can help a book's sales, I think that this issue is selling almost three times what it was selling before the crossover. The good thing is that the creative team took the opportunity to not just tie-in, but to tell a very good story with a major twist. Before the crossover, I was on the fence about the comic, but it has gotten my attention back. Mildly recommended unless you are hooked on Civil War, then it's a must-buy.

42 SQUADRON SUPREME #4 $2.99 MAR 48,035
43 CAPTAIN AMERICA #19 $2.99 MAR 47,315

Since 9/11, Marvel has been trying to make Captain America a must read book, and with this re-launch, they finally have. The current story arc, using a pair of villains that used to be about as interesting as dry oatmeal has been a well-done action story that deals as much with the personalities as the action, and is one of Marvel's best books. Highly recommended.

44 NIGHTWING #121 $2.99 DC 44,974

Remember what I said about how bad Spectacular Spider-Man was? It pales in comparison to just how big a pile of festering dog crap this comic is. I have not read anything this bad since Skateman #1. I know that Bruce Jones can do better work than this, so I don't know what the reason is behind how bad this comic is, but I'm actually amazed that anyone is buying it at this point, other than for the same reason you slow down at a car wreck to see the carnage.

45 OUTSIDERS #37 $2.99 DC 44,109
46 SUPERGIRL & LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #19 $2.99 DC 43,918

This has been a good comic since the relaunch, using the characters but not tryign to confuse people with the by now insanely convoluted history of the Legion, but adding Supergirl has done two things that make the book better. First, it gives them a way to make the 30th century setting seem more interesting and accessable and second, it is the only comic that hasn't made me feel like a sexual pervert when I read a Supergirl story by not presenting her as a sick object of desire. The stories are great reading, and the comic is highly recommended.

47 CRISIS AFTERMATH SPECTRE #2 (Of 3) $2.99 DC 43,436

The Spectre is a hard character for me to like. He has been written as an omnipotent Weapon of God for a long time, meaning that there really is no suspense in any fo the stories. However, this mini-series about one fo the characters from the “Gotham Central” series deciding if he will accept the mantle has made the concept interesting, and the story is one that has kept my interest. Highly recommended.

48 X-MEN END MEN & X-MEN #6 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 42,686

Chris Claremont finishes up his story of how he would end the X-Men series, and touches on all of the things you expect in a Chris Claremont story. It's pretty much tailor made to be a trade paperback, so that's how I will read it.

49 CRISIS AFTERMATH BATTLE FOR BLUDHAVEN #5 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 42,219

You know how I said Nightwing was the worst comic of the month, the year, the decade and possibly longer? This one is damn close. Quite possibly one of the worst comics not printed with someone's lunch money, and it smells of being nothing but a collection of editorial fiats.

50 ANNIHILATION SILVER SURFER #3 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 41,637

All of the Annihilation mini-series have been solid stories that re-establish the Marvel “cosmic” heroes and shake off a lot of years of bad stories. I liked the Surfer and Nova series a lot, the Super Skrull story was so-so and I didn't care a lot for Ronin. Hoever, as an event, I like the ideas being worked with here, and I am pleased with the story overall. The entire event is highly recommended.

51 MS MARVEL #4 $2.99 MAR 40,627
52 SHADOWPACT #2 $2.99 DC 39,969

The good thing about this comic is that Bill Willingham is writing and drawing the book, and is making a team of obscure DC heroes interesting enough that I like reading it. The bad thing is that Willingham is only drawing the first two issues. Out of all of the new DC series, this is one that I am glad I picked up, since the characters being used are all interesting, and a year ago, I wouldn't have been remotely interested in any of them. Highly recommended.

53 NEW X-MEN #27 $2.99 MAR 39,785

And how many characters were killed in this issue? I was willing to give the new creators on the book a chance to make it their own, but almost ten issues in to their storyline, it just keeps trying to “shock” with death after death after death. After a while, it's no longer shocking, it's kind of sad and clingy, as if they are begging you to keep reading. Sorry, but I need to see other comics.

54 ROBIN #151 $2.99 DC 38,921
55 BLUE BEETLE #4 $2.99 DC 38,622
56 GIANT SIZE HULK #1 $4.99 MAR 38,102

Marvel's Giant Size comics have all been fun, but I can see why some people get upset about them. They usually have a short new story in the front, then reprints that make up the rest of the book, and this one isn't an excpetion. However, the front story is set in Marvel's past, and reads like a comic from the 70's in a good way with a lot of action and a quick plot twist at the end. The rest of the comic is made up of a reprint of “Hulk: The End” which was one of the first, and best “The End” books. It tells the story of Hulk after most other human are gone, and gives a solid conclusion to the character. Highly recommended.

57 GREEN ARROW #63 $2.99 DC 37,803

I didn't care for Judd Winnik on GA before One Year Later, but with him making GA mayor, and taking the focus off of the supernatural, this comic is now much mor ereadable, and has Scott McDaniels's impressive art. This comic is highly recommended.

58 IRON MAN #9 $2.99 MAR 37,650
59 CHECKMATE #3 $2.99 DC 37,551

Three issues in, and it's still not clear what the main agenda for the comic is, and that's a good thing. Why? It is a series set in the espionage end of the DC Universe, and reads like a well constructed Robert Ludlom novel with super-heroes in it. I will imagine that readers will be pretty lost if they pick it up cold within a few months, so give it a try now before the spycraft gets TOO deep. Highly recommended.

60 NEW EXCALIBUR #8 $2.99 MAR 37,428
61 ANNIHILATION NOVA #3 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 36,663
62 JSA CLASSIFIED #13 $2.99 DC 36,066

By this issue, they were finally done with the Vandal Savage story, which didn't seem to be a JSA story, but more that it was the book they could fit it in to, and if they couldn't, it would have been a Batman or Superman story. Normally, I love this book, but I havent' cared for this story arc.

63 ANNIHILATION SUPER SKRULL #3 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 35,576
64 STAR WARS LEGACY #1 $2.99 DAR 34,758

OK, this is a good idea for the Star Wars comics: Telling what happened between Episode III and IV. I looked through the first issue, and it looked solid, had a lot of action and didn't fill its pages with obscure characters created just for the comic series. I'll check it out when it gets collected as a trade.

65 PUNISHER #34 (MR) $2.99 MAR 34,161

Garth Ennis should be chained to this book and never allowed to leave. It's a great action series that remembers that The Punisher himself is a simple character, and the appeal is in both the criminals he faces, and the visceral thrill of seeing bad guys get theirs in the most brutal way possible. It very easily could be a bland book about bad guys getting killed, but Ennis is such a gifted writer than he makes each 6 issue story arc a great read, and this comic is highly recommended for mature readers.

66 JLA CLASSIFIED #22 $2.99 DC 34,023
67 BIRDS OF PREY #95 $2.99 DC 33,954
68 JLA CLASSIFIED #23 $2.99 DC 33,564

This comic is one of my favorites, and this issue is exactly why. Steve Englehart was one of the best comics writers of the 70's, and for the most part, comic styles have passed him by, making his work seem dated and stilted. But on this book, he can tell solid, self-contained stories that work well. This story arc, using the HORRID characters from the mid 80's Justice League Detroit could have been a train wreck, but he made each of the characters interesting and made the Royal Flush Gang into more than just a time wasting joke. Solid super-hero stuff written in an older style that doesn't feel like revisiting past glories. Highly recommended.

69 EXILES #82 $2.99 MAR 33,342
70 EXILES #83 $2.99 MAR 33,143

This is a series I say the same thing about every month. If you are a long-time Marvel fan who knows the history, this comic of a group of heroes from alternate universes saving different universes from “something horrible” is a great read that is a lot of fun. If you aren't, you'll be confused and annoyed. Recommended for a small group of fans.

71 ANNIHILATION RONAN #3 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 33,074
72 SUPERMAN RETURNS KRYPTON TO EARTH $3.99 DC 32,936

One of the things that I really hate are comic book adaptations of movies. I see no need for them, but the one-shots DC did, filling in the story between Superman II and the current Superman movie is pretty much the perfect way to tie-in to a movie and make the comic worth buying.

73 CONAN #29 (MR) $2.99 DAR 32,049
74 RED SONJA #11* $2.99 DE 31,176

Now that the crze for Red Sonja incentive covers is dying out, the sales are going to end up being aroudn that of Conan because the series are pretty much the same type of heroic fantasy. I'm buy theCona comic as trades, since Dark Horse is great about getting those out, and Red Sonja as comics, since their publisher hasn't put any out yet. Both are solidly done fantasy series by talented creators and mildly recommended.

75 SUPERMAN RETURNS LEX LUTHOR $3.99 DC 30,908
76 SUPERMAN RETURNS MA KENT $3.99 DC 30,074
77 CATWOMAN #56 $2.99 DC 28,942
78 BATMAN SECRETS #4 (Of 5) $2.99 DC 28,881
79 BLACK PANTHER #17 $2.99 MAR 27,993
80 HAWKGIRL #53 $2.99 DC 27,786

I am reading a LOT of bad reviews for this book, and while the stories haven't been as good as I would like, Howard Chaykin's art is worth the cover price, even if the story stunk to high heaven (and it doesn't). Mildly recommended.

81 SUPERMAN RETURNS LOIS LANE $3.99 DC 26,493
82 LAST PLANET STANDING #3 (Of 5) $2.99 MAR 26,447

Another of the big Tom DeFalco stories set in his alternate Marvel Future, and while it's not going to win any awards, it's a fun action comic that reads like a big event from Marvel in the 80's. It'll read a lot better collected, but if you miss those Marvel comics of the mid 80's, this will read like it's 1986 and you need something to wash the bad taste of Secret Wars II out of your brain. Mildly recommended.

83 SPAWN #157 $2.95 IMA 26,325
84 FABLES #50 (MR) (Note Price) $3.99 DC 26,210
85 Y THE LAST MAN #46 (MR) $2.99 DC 25,881
86 LAST PLANET STANDING #4 (Of 5) $2.99 MAR 25,529
87 CABLE DEADPOOL #29 $2.99 MAR 25,368
88 NEXTWAVE AGENTS OF HATE #6 $2.99 MAR 24,626

My Favorite Comic of the month, BY FAR!! Nextwave is a super-hero comic that knows that super-hero comics are, at their core, a silly idea, but never insults the reader or the characters. OK, Maybe it insults The Captain, but since Ellis created him, he can do that. Every issue is a great read, and I defy anyone who likes super-hero comics to pick it up and not chuckle at least once as well as love the big fight scenes. Nextwave: Helping America by beating people up! Highly recommended.

89 BATMAN LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #207 $2.99 DC 24,457
90 RUNAWAYS #17 $2.99 MAR 23,654
91 STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC #6 $2.99 DAR 23,424
92 STAR WARS REBELLION #3 $2.99 DAR 23,256
93 STORM #5 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 21,840

Another comic trying to convince us that Storm and Black Panther are a match made in comics heaven instead of an event to try and get people to buy Black Panther. It's not a horrible comic, it's just completely unnessesary.

94 FIRESTORM THE NUCLEAR MAN #26 $2.99 DC 21,833
95 CONAN BOOK OF THOTH #4 (Of 4) $4.99 DAR 21,075

I have a deep love for Kelly Jones's art style, which is creepy, expressionistic and evokes great emotional response as it tells the story, and this mini-series is one of his better works. It's pretty much a standard Conan story with wizards, monsters and Conan hacking and slashing his way through the plot. Highly recommended if you flip through and like the art style.

96 JONAH HEX #8 $2.99 DC 21,006
97 ALL NEW OFFICIAL HANDBOOK MARVEL UNIVERSE A TO Z #6 $3.99 MAR 20,731
98 EX MACHINA SP #2 (Of 2) (MR) $2.99 DC 20,677

Ex Machina is one of my favorite comics, and while I don't see the need for a Special, this flashback story could have been part of the main series. Still, like everyo other issue, it deals with super-heroics, political situations and has complex, interesting characters. This two part story is a good way for new readers to see if this is their kind of book, so on that front, this comic is highly recommended.

99 FOUR #30 $2.99 MAR 20,294

The last issue, and having read it all in trade paperbacks, the reason it didn't make it was simply because it wasn't interesting. For a spin-off of a mid-selling book to work, it has to do something so compelling that it gives readers something they don't get in the main book, and this just read like another FF series that didn't tie in to the rest of the Marvel Universe.

100 CAPTAIN ATOM ARMAGEDDON #9 (Of 9) $2.99 DC 20,279
101 EX MACHINA #21 (MR) $2.99 DC 20,195
102 WALKING DEAD #28 (MR) $2.99 IMA 20,118

At this point, the trades are outselling the comic over time, but the comic is still well worth reading because of the letters page, and how the comic is constructed. A horror comic set in a world where zombies have taken over, this is the best fo the latest glut of “zombie comics” because it focuses on the humans and not the gore. Highly recommended.

103 BATMAN JOURNEY INTO KNIGHT #10 (Of 12) $2.99 DC 19,537
104 RED SONJA CLAW DEVILS HANDS #4 (Of 4) $2.99 DC 19,445

If this mini-series was supposed to get me interested in the relaunch of DC's Claw character, it failed. This read like just another Red Sonja story, which is too bad, since they have flooded the market with stories using the character since bringing her back.

105 SGT ROCK PROPHECY #6 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 19,177
106 X-MEN FAIRY TALES #2 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 18,817
107 GI JOE VS TRANSFORMERS VOL 3 ART OF WAR #4 (Of 5)* $2.95 DDP 18,772
108 MARVEL TEAM-UP #21 $2.99 MAR 18,397

This series has been canceled with issue 25, and while I have moved the idea of following a villain or story instead of following a specific hero has been great to read not enough people felt the same way. The current story introduces a new hero in a unique way, and I'm looking forward to how it all wraps up. Highly recommended, even though it's all wrapping up.

109 MAN-BAT #3 (Of 5) $2.99 DC 18,282
110 SPIDER-GIRL #99 $2.99 MAR 17,915

Next to last issue, and if you haven't bought the previous 98 issues, you won't buy this one either as it wraps up plot threads and tries to give a huge cliffhanger for the people who are still reading it.

111 GI JOE AMERICAS ELITE #12 $2.95 DDP 17,777
112 FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST FAMILY #4 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 17,761

Marvel keeps putting out FF mini-series, and while all of them are worth reading, no one seems to be interested. Hopefully, when the next movie comes out, the trades will get a little more attention. Mildly recommended, but you know if it is a Marvel mini-series, it'll be out as a trade within a month of the final part of the story hitting store shelves.

113 CIVIL WAR #1 (Of 7)* $3.99 MAR 17,716

Yeah. These are reorders. And they sold better than about an eighth of Marvel's line. Amazing.

114 FURY PEACEMAKER #5 (Of 6) $3.50 MAR 16,981
115 ARMY OF DARKNESS #8* $2.99 DE 16,430
116 FATHOM #9 $2.99 ASP 16,131
117 WARLORD #5 $2.99 DC 16,070
118 BPRD UNIVERSAL MACHINE #3 (Of 5) $2.99 DAR 16,040
119 MANHUNTER #23 $2.99 DC 15,542

121 DMZ #8 (MR) $2.99 DC 14,999
122 LOVELESS #8 (MR) $2.99 DC 14,915

I just got done with the trade paperback, which collects the first five issues, and wanted to like this comic, but didn't. It is an attempt to tell an adult western, but ends up being just another action movie set in an odd setting, and didn't have any characters I found interesting enough to follow.

123 CLAW THE UNCONQUERED #1 $2.99 DC 14,785
124 BITE CLUB VAMPIRE CRIME UNIT #3 (Of 5) (MR) $2.99 DC 14,777
125 WITCHBLADE #99 $2.99 IMA 14,524
126 CYBERFORCE #0 $2.99 IMA 14,333
127 SOLO #11 $4.99 DC 14,119

With it's last issue, this series also prints its best, with an entire issue of Sergio Aragones stories. Sergio is an amazing artist that a lot of comics fans dismiss because he works in humor, but each of the stories in this comic are perfectly paced and drawn. From humor to biography, this is a great issue of a series I will miss, and is highly recommended.

128 AMERICAN VIRGIN #4 (MR) $2.99 DC 14,081
129 HELLBLAZER #221 (MR) $2.99 DC 13,973

I want to like this comic a lot more, but now I'm just buying it out of inertia, and only read it when a story arc finishes. It's nothing I can really recommend, but its not so bad I'm going to drop it. Hopefully, the next creative team figures out a way to make the book more than just servicing the trademark.

130 100 BULLETS #73 (MR) $2.99 DC 13,407
131 GI JOE DECLASSIFIED #1 (Of 3) MANAPUL CVR A $4.95 DDP 13,025
132 TRANSFORMERS GENERATIONS (IDW) #4 (Note Price) $2.49 IDW 12,986

About four or five years ago, Transformers return was the hottest comic on the stands and made people think that an 80's nostalgia boom was in the cards. Now, the company that printed those best selling issues has gone under, the book has tumbled down the charts and while there is a movie coming out, the comic seems to be selling only to the hardest of the hard core.

133 INVINCIBLE #33 $2.99 IMA 12,940
134 INVINCIBLE #32 $2.99 IMA 12,910
135 SHRUGGED #1 $2.99 ASP 12,887

137 HAUNT OF HORROR EDGAR ALLAN POE #2 (Of 3) (MR) $3.99 MAR 12,497

I don't quite know what to make of this series. I like the idea of Corben drawing adaptations of older Poe stories, but at $4 an issue, I'm not THAT interested, and with it being only 3 issues, that seems too short to be collected as a trade.

138 TESTAMENT #7 (MR) $2.99 DC 11,770
139 MANIFEST ETERNITY #1 $2.99 DC 11,387
140 SUPERMAN BATMAN #26 (Note Price) $3.99 DC 11,356
141 MARVEL WESTERNS TWO GUN KID $3.99 MAR 11,257

I know it marks me as a fanboy, but I love when Marvel uses its older, more obscure characters. These one-shots have been well done, but really only appeal to people who are interested in the older characters. There's nothing here that will blow the doors off for a new reader, but the package of a new story by a classic creative team, and a couple of older story reprints makes this a must read for people who are interested in Marvel's western characters while not appealing to newer readers. Mildly recommended.

142 LUCIFER #75 (MR) (Note Price) $3.99 DC 11,012

Final issue. I'm buying it as trades, so I'm running a little over a year behind, but it has felt like it has been building toward a conclusion in the last couple of trade paperbacks. The series, a spin-off of Sandman, has never set the sales charts on fire, but for a series selling around 11,000 to 15,000 over its history, 75 issues is an impressive run.

143 EXTERMINATORS #6 (MR) $2.99 DC 11,004
144 GIRLS #14 (MR) $2.99 IMA 10,920

An excellent horror series with fantastic art, but this deep in the story, it's best for new readers to pick up the trades. Still, I'm glad I took a chance on what sounded like a very strange story. Highly recommended.

145 TEEN TITANS GO #32 $2.25 DC 10,736
146 SIMPSONS COMICS #119 $2.99 BON 10,537

The best TV-based series I have ever read. The comic has been better than the show for the past couple of years, and current issues are no exception. Highly recommended.

147 JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLTD #22 $2.25 DC 10,430
148 RISING STARS UNTOUCHABLE #5 (Of 5) $2.99 IMA 10,048

Image is able to keep putting out mini-series using JMS's “Rising Stars” even though the comic had a clear ending when he finished it off. I wasn't a huge fan of the main book, so these spin-off mini-series hold little interest for me.

149 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #532 CW $2.99 MAR 9,979

157 AMERICAN WAY #5 (Of 8) $2.99 DC 8,831
158 FALLEN ANGEL IDW #6 $3.99 IDW 8,510

This was originally a 5 issue mini-series, but did well enough it is now a regular series. It's also Peter David's best writing in a long time. This issue starts a new story, and while David doesn't give the reader everything up front, he makes it interesting to watch how he unfolds the main character's past and the situation she is in. A dark fantasy series that is highly recommended.

159 BATMAN STRIKES #22 $2.25 DC 8,104
160 HARD TIME SEASON TWO #7 $2.99 DC 8,043

Last issue, and you really can't blame DC for this series failing. They put out trades, relaunched it, but I think the fact that it was part of a failed super-hero line killed it from the beginning. It's a shame, since this story of a teenager who has been sentenced as an adult and discovers he has super-powers was writer Steve Gerber's best work since the 70's, and is a must read. Highly recommended.

161 BART SIMPSON COMICS #30 $2.99 BON 8,043
162 ELRIC MAKING OF SORCERER #3 (Of 4) (RES) $5.99 DC 8,027
163 MARVEL SPOTLIGHT MARK MILLAR STEVE MCNIVEN $2.99 MAR 7,668
164 SWAMP THING #28 (MR) $2.99 DC 7,553

Last issue, and this new revamp of the Swamp Thing character just never got anyone's attention.

165 GARGOYLES #1 $3.50 SLG 7,538
166 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #163 $2.25 ARC 7,469
167 UNDERWORLD #5 (Of 5) $2.99 MAR 7,423

With sales like this, this story of a low level criminal in the Marvel Universe has to be considered a flop. If they would have tied it to an event or a major character, I think readers would have given it a try, but as is, no one was all that interested in it.

168 MARVEL WESTERNS OUTLAW FILES $3.99 MAR 7,285

This is not really a comic book, but a collection fo text stories that fill in the entire history of Marvel's western characters. As I read through it, it's well written for what it is, and shows that someone spent a lot of time digging through this stuff. A nice book for people who want to know the backstory of Marvel's Western line, but otherwise, it's pretty much aimed at very hard core fanboys.

169 SAVAGE DRAGON #127 $2.99 IMA 6,880

174 AVENGERS & POWER PACK ASSEMBLE #3 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 6,137
175 MARVEL ADVS SPIDER-MAN #16 $2.99 MAR 6,114

I started picking up the book now that Peter David is writing it, and while it is clearly aimed at younger readers, it's still a solid Spider-Man story with action and wit. No, it doesn't have the trademark “soap opera” drama that Spider-Man is best known for, but as a quick, fun read, this is well worth it. Mildly recommended.

184 GRIMM FAIRY TALES #6 $2.99 ZEN 5,234
185 KNIGHTS OF THE DINNER TABLE #115 $4.99 KEN 5,158

Another solid issue of this very funny book. Unlike a lot of funny comics, this is about a collection of fun characters who happen to be gamers, with about half of the comic taken up with articles about RPGs. Highly recommended for gamers, and mildly recommended for everyone else.

186 PVP #27 $2.99 IMA 4,989

189 CITY OF HEROES #14 $2.99 IMA 4,890
190 THUNDERBOLT JAXON #5 (Of 5) $2.99 DC 4,852

For a DC super-hero mini-series to sell this poorly just amazes me. I don't think they promoted it at all or had a creative team that could get some attention on it, so it just flopped out on the market and most readers had no idea what it was.

191 MARVEL ADVS FANTASTIC FOUR #13 $2.99 MAR 4,752

200 MICKEY MOUSE & FRIENDS #290 $2.95 GEM 4,117
201 NOBLE CAUSES #21 $3.50 IMA 4,025

This is an odd book. I have no doubt this super-hero soap opera would sell ten times as many copies if it had Marvel or DC on the cover and was crossing over with the Teen Titans or the X-Men, but instead, since it's at Image and completely self-contained, it sells 4000 copies. I buy it as trades and recommend it that way to new readers, but it really is an under-rated super-hero book. Mildly recommended.

207 MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD $2.99 MAR 3,727

The last of the run of re-written Marvel romance comics, and while it's not a new idea, it is a funny one. Marvel's attempts at this have been well worth the price, and each issue has gotten a few laughs out of me. Highly recommended.

208 WALT DISNEYS COMICS & STORIES #670 $6.95 GEM 3,719
209 MARVEL MILESTONES RAWHIDE KID & TWO GUN KID $3.99 MAR 3,597

Yeah, it's a reprint book, but the Marvel Western comics haven't ever gotten a lot of love from fans. They were drawn by the same people who drew the early Marvel books, and since Stan Lee was writing them, they read a lot like Marvel's early super-hero books, just without the multi-issue story lines. This reprint is a good way to try some of the books, and over the years, I have found that I like them more than the Monster books that have gotten much more of the reprint and fan attention. Highly recommended.

210 WOLVERINE #42 CW $2.99 MAR 3,558
211 BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL #114 (MR) $2.99 DAR 3,535

This is the last of the manga books still printed as a regular monthly comic book, and with sales like this, I have no idea why. It must sell better as trades when you mix in the bookstore sales, so this strikes me as strange.

224 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #28 $2.95 MIR 2,678

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should probably be selling better than this, given how well known the characters are, and the fervent fan-base. The problem is two-fold in my opinion. First, they aren't putting much effort into marketing the books and second, the back list isn't available. Back when Cerebus's creator put out the first of the “Phone books”, the Turtles's creators did the same thing so that people could get the first 16 or so issues in a big book. They kept it up for a while, but if you go into a comic shop now and want to read the back issues, you have to dig through bins, have to figure out what Turtles series is which and hope they aren't priced insanely. Dear Eastman and Laird: Get the collections back in print!!

The “Love and Rockets” books are ones that I know I should like, but every time I would try reading the collected trades in the 80's, they just didn't appeal to me. I appreciate the craft and talent involved, I just found that they weren't of any interest to me.

235 SECRET SIX #1 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 2,464

I just picked this comic at random, but if you notice, there are a LOT of DC comics that are clocking in with substantial reorders. DC and Marvel have both stepped up their game, and not just with Big Crossovers, but with having creative teams that do solid super-hero comics, and work toward making the characters interesting. I'm not ready to say that we're in a “Golden Age”, but mainstream comics haven't been this interesting and worth reading in a long time across the board.

I REALLY wish this comic was selling better. During the dregs of the 90's, when most mainstream comics were either a crossover, drawn by a Liefeld clone or both, this was one of the few comics that I looked forward to every month. An anthology book with mostly short stories by talented people, this is a book that always gives me my money's worth. It's filled with substantial stories that take TIME to read instead of being quick, disposable reads like most comics. Highly recommended.

A cute, funny idea that would work as a one-shot every now and then. But three issues in, I'm already getting tired of it. The thing about comedy comics built on limited premises is that you can't count on a SERIES out of it, but should just leave the stage while the audience is still thinking it's a great idea.

Yeah, there are too many zombie comics out right now, but the good thing about trends like this is that the good ones will last, and the ones put out by people who say “I think zombies sell, let's put something out to hit that trend” usually end up in quarter bins with the pogs and the endless X-Men rip-offs Image did in the 90's.

Another movies adapatation, this one for a movie that was aimed at kids (who don't go into comic shops) and is selling for $8, which is more than a kid's ticket to a movie. Does anyone think about things like this, or are they just so giddy about getting the rights that they leave their brain in the meeting room?

If you want more proof that the format of regular comics is getting too expensive, just look at this book.
