The Top 300 Selling Comics for July 2006

Thanks for checking out this column which is a look at sales of Comics where I comment on their sales, if they are any good or whatever other snarky remarks come to mind as I look over the sales figures.

So, what is this list? Every month, Diamond Comics (the company that ships comic books to comic book shops) list the sales figures of the previous month so that they can list actual sales through the entire month, but they list it in the form of “average number of copies sold to each comic shop”. Then, the site www.ICV2.com goes through the numbers they post and attempts to turn it into an approximation of the actual number of books sold. The Top 300 Selling Comics for March 2006

1 CIVIL WAR #3 (Of 7)* $2.99 MAR 290,709

Wow. These are HUGE sales, and with all of the reorder activity that is going on, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually were able to push this closer to 350,000, which means that there are a lot of people out there who are excited about this story. Back in the early 90's, crossovers were big events, but they wen to the well too many times, and the crossovers didn't really matter. Now, this one matters, and is making huge changes, which fans seem to want. Is the story any good? I have some minor quibbles with it, but overall, it's a Big Story that actually feels like a big story. The crossovers have all added to the story instead of feeling like something you were tricked into buying. Highly recommended.

2 JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #0* $2.99 DC 162,378

Normally, I have an active hatred of the idea of a 0 issue, I picked this one up because it has some powerhouse talent on it and the plot was “How Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman decided to bring back the Justice League.” When I got done reading this comic, I felt like I had paid $3 for a promo issue, and while it was clever, it would have worked better if it would have been one of the low price promotional comics instead of a full-priced book. It goes through the history of the Justice League, as well as flash-forwarding to possible future events to show why the team is needed, but this isn't a story on its own. Mildly recommended as long as you are already buying this series.

3 NEW AVENGERS #22 CW $2.99 MAR 124,617

Any of the Marvel books with “CW” after the title is a comic that ties in the Civil War, and probably got a sales bump because of it. Except for this comic, which was already one of Marvel's biggest sellers, even after relaunching two years ago. A great issue telling the side story of how characters are choosing sides, and even though the main event isn't being written by Bendis, he writes this story as if it were all his idea. Highly recommended.

4 52 WEEK #11** $2.50 DC 122,016

After three months, it's pretty clear that comics fans are picking this series up, but if they weren't, this would be the month that orders would drop. As the series goes, the best way to describe it is that it is a real-time soap opera that tries to tell everything going on in the DC Universe over a year when Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman aren't around. To read an individual issue, there's not a lot of substance, but as the series goes on, it reads much better, as the larger storylines have time to move along. This review goes for all of the issues this month, and if you are a mainstream super-hero fan, this is a solid entertaining comic that will bring you back to the shop every week to see where they are going. If you aren't, this sort of Universe building will hold no interest for you.

5 BATMAN #655* $2.99 DC 113,567

Grant Morrison and Adam Kubert on Batman. That was enough for me, but I'm a fanboy, and Grant Morrison is my favorite writer in comics. For people who aren't, this is really the best Batman comic to start reading with in years. The story starts quickly, showing how Batman has put all of the villains in Gotham behind bars, and goes back to his 70's incarnation as a super-hero version of James Bond. It's refreshing after years of people writing Frank Miller's Batman, and the story seems simple on the surface, but is written as carefully as any of Alan Moore's books. ON top of all of that, there is a sense of humor to the book that doesn't detract from the story or the character. Highly recommended.

6 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #534 CW $2.99 MAR 113,522

So, now that Spider-Man has revealed his secret identity to the world, will the stories be any good? If this issue is any indication, the answer is yes, and the emotional fall-out of the decision is used as the anchor to a solid Spider-Man story. After over a year of bad stories, this title is back on track and is once again mildly recommended.

7 CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #3 (Of 10) $2.99 MAR 111,421

Most of the time, when a Big Event comic has a tie-in mini-series, they are just there to feed off of the buzz, and feel tossed together at the last minute. Front Line is completely different, in that it expands the main story and feels just as important as the newest issue of the main book. A lot of good work has gone into this series, and there are two or three short stories in each issue, but they don't FEE: short. A highly recommended tie-in, and if you are buying and liking Civil War, this is a must-read.

8 WOLVERINE ORIGINS #4 $2.99 MAR 110,830

As this series goes on, I like parts of it more, and other parts of it less. I have to get this out of the way, Steve Dillan is one of the best artists in comics at drawing normal people in normal garb, and highly emotional scenes, but this series is showing that he makes people in super-hero costumes look damn silly. This story is of a harder edge than the regular Wolverine comic, and it works better, since it is filling in the more unsavory parts of Wolverine's past. Mildly recommended.

9 CIVIL WAR X-MEN #1 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 106,162

Not ALL Civil War tie-ins have been good, and this is the living example of that. Picking up from the painfully lackluster “The 198” mini-series, it continues that mini-series focus on bland characters that the creative team can't find a way to make interesting. One issue in, and I'm done.

10 WOLVERINE #44 CW $2.99 MAR 105,220

Following up on one of the other loose threads from Civil War, this series is dealing with Wolverine hunting down the villain that started it all and finding out there is more here than meets the eye. This series has become a standard Marvel super-hero comic with Wolverine in it, rather than the “special story arcs” it was when it started. They are done well enough, and have a solid tie-in with Civil War (rather than just mentioning it so that it can be featured on the cover). I LOVE Ramos's art, and that's why this average comic is mildly recommended.

11 UNCANNY X-MEN #475* $2.99 MAR 103,993

I'm a bit surprised that out of the two X-Men books, this one is selling better, since I like the story in the other X-Men book much more. Bachalo's art makes this series a bit harder to read, and Mike Carey's story pales when compared to the Big Cosmic Event going on in X-Men. Still, it's a step up from where the book has been for the last 5 years or so, and comes in as an average super-hero team book.

12 CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #4 (Of 10) $2.99 MAR 103,153

See above review. I like it when comics come out more than once a month, since I can just direct people to what I've already written and slack off. Yay slacking!

13 52 WEEK #9** $2.50 DC 102,142
14 52 WEEK #10** $2.50 DC 100,779

Speaking of me slacking...

15 GHOST RIDER #1* $2.99 MAR 98,826

Ghost Rider is one of those comics that relies an a GREAT visual, and rarely has stories that measure up to the visual impact of the character. I didn't care at ALL for the 90's version of the character and was prepared to ignore this version, but after reading the first issue, I decided to give it a try. The first issue deals with the lead character's attempts at getting out of hell, and the different lies and tricks used to keep him there. For a first issue, it sets things up nicely, and kept my interest all the way to the end. Mildly recommended.

16 52 WEEK #12** $2.50 DC 98,667
17 X-MEN #188* $2.99 MAR 95,487

This book is coming out twice a month, and since it is in a 12 part story, I think that's a good idea so that the damn thing doesn't fill up a whole year's worth of X-Men. Ed Brubaker is probably best known for a darker approach to characters, and a “ground level” approach that makes the characters seem a bit more reality based. His run on the X-Men, however, is a grand space epic, and it's gotten me interested in the characters for the first time in a few years. I'm interested to see where they are going with it, and it really feels like one of the early Claremont stories. Mildly recommended.

18 SUPERMAN BATMAN #28 $2.99 DC 92,603

I have to admit that I am a HUGE Ethan Van Scriber fan, and I buy any comic he works on. I also like the idea of this comic, but the first 25 issues (while they sold well) were bad. So bad that I doubt there is a human being alive who can explain what happened in issues 19 – 25 without giving me a headache. The new creative team is scaling back on the confusion and is moving toward trying to tell Big Deal super-hero stories. So far, I'm liking it, and it's mildly recommended for the amazing art.

19 UNCANNY X-MEN #476 $2.99 MAR 88,775
20 CIVIL WAR YOUNG AVENGERS & RUNAWAYS #1 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 85,346

I love both of these comics, and was excited about this crossover, since it had a good concept, and could have been a lot of fun. Reading the first issue, I was shocked at just how bland it was. There wasn't enough room for the characters to do anything but have a kind of roll call. By the end of the issue, I'd given up on the story and won't be getting the other issues unless I hear differently.

21 SUPERGIRL #7 (RES) $2.99 DC 85,175

I thought that the new creative team on the book could take it from being painfully confusing with skeevy art to a comic worth reading. I was wrong.

22 ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #31* $2.99 MAR 84,460

This book got a HUGE bump by tying in with the Marvel Zombies mini-series, and had a good 3 part story that dealt with that plotline. Still, the comic is best read as trade paperbacks, since it is written in “story arcs”, and most individual issues don't work well on their own. Recommended as books.

23 X-MEN #189 $2.99 MAR 82,268
24 GREEN LANTERN #12 $2.99 DC 80,292

Still one of DC's best super-hero books, with a solid art team. They have done a good job of keeping this comic interesting, even without a bunch of tie-ins. A good super-hero comic and mildly recommended.

25 FLASH FASTEST MAN ALIVE #2 $2.99 DC 77,487

Wow, has this comic turned to crap since it was restarted. The previous Flash series didn't so much end and it kind of went away, with a painfully sub-par final five issues that felt like fill-ins as they waited for a re-launch, but this relaunch is unreadable. The worst part of it is that they have taken a very interesting character (Bart Allen) and drained every bit of personality out of him. The bland “I don't want to be a hero” plot of the book could work if Bart was played as someone interesting, but as is, it feels like a crappy 80's TV show, and I'm not paying money for that.

26 SUPERGIRL #8 (RES) $2.99 DC 76,942
27 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #97 $2.99 MAR 76,612

The words “clone saga” put fear in any comic fan who has been reading comics from a while, but the first issue of this story has been really good. It shakes off the feeling of sameness that was clogging up the comic over the last three or four issues, and looks to shake things up. It's good to have a Spider-Man comic that s so good that an average story feels like a step down, and this was an above average issue. Highly recommended.

28 ETERNALS #2 (Of 6)* $3.99 MAR 74,193

You know the minute this Neil Gaiman mini-series is done, there will be a nice hardcover with sketches and essays that will end up costing less than buying all six issues off the stands, so why are you buying it as regular issues?

29 TEEN TITANS #37 $2.99 DC 71,263

Since the “One Year Later” event, this comic has been having trouble finding its way. I know the story is that the team fell apart and is slowly coming back together, but every time a comic does that kind of story, I get bored waiting for the inevitable “The Team Is Back” issue. This series is REALLY stretching it out and needs to get back to the super-hero soap opera it was before the Event because this story just isn't cutting it for me.

30 ULTIMATE X-MEN #72 $2.99 MAR 70,593
31 BLACK PANTHER #18 CW* $3.99 MAR 69,912

A Civil War tie in gives this comic it's highest sales EVER. That and the marriage to Storm seem to have given this book a lot of attention, but I doubt people will keep reading it, since it's just not a very good comic.

32 SUPERMAN #654 $2.99 DC 69,526
33 X-FACTOR #9 CW $2.99 MAR 68,799

X-Factor is one of those comics that I hope benefits from the Civil War tie-in because it is such a great comic. It is the FIRST book to pick up the threads of the whole “House of M” thing and give Quicksilver a personality, deals well with the loss of mutant powers, and turns it into good stories that you don't have to have read every Marvel book for the past two years to figure out. A great Marvel book that feeds the fanboy needs while still telling stories that can interest a casual reader. Highly recommended.

34 DETECTIVE COMICS #821 $2.99 DC 67,345

One of the great things about the “One Year Later” gimmick is that the Batman books have been given a completely new direction. This series focuses on actual mysteries, is written by Paul Dini (who wrote the Batman Animated show) and is focused on single issue stories. A great comic, each issue is well worth reading, and is highly recommended.

35 ACTION COMICS #841 $2.99 DC 58,657

The Superman books have been rebooted as well as the Batman books, but they just don't seem as different and fresh as the Batman comics. This series especially has been just an average super-hero comic, although it doesn't have the endless subplots and boring villains that the series suffered under for the last five years. It's just a perfectly average comic.

36 SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #28 $2.99 MAR 58,532

Out of all of the Spider-Man comics, this one is the complete stinker. Much line the writer's “4” series about the Fantastic Four, it dredges up boring 70's villains, and completely missed the point of the lead character. You can ignore this one and not feel like you are missing anything.

37 GREEN LANTERN CORPS #2 $2.99 DC 56,886

I lost interest in the mini-series when it came out, but this book is MUCH better. It focuses on the rebuilding of the Corps, but it narrows the focus down to a few major characters so the plotline is easier to keep focused. A nice spin-off of the man Green Lantern storyline, and highly recommended for GL fans.

38 CABLE DEADPOOL #30 CW $2.99 MAR 56,818
39 THUNDERBOLTS #104 CW $2.99 MAR 54,092

Two painfully mediocre books that got a huge bump for tying in with Civil War. They aren't very good, and the crossover didn't change that.

40 OMAC #1 (Of 8) $2.99 DC 54,092

Bruce Jones is getting an on-line rep as a bad writer, but as I read this book, it become more apparent to me that he's just not a good writer when it comes to super-heroes. The non-super-hero stuff, and the horror of the main character's situation is very well done, but the fight scenes and other continuity stuff just doesn't seem to work for me. I'm in it for a few more issues to see where they are going, but it's on the edge.

41 ION #4 (Of 12) $2.99 DC 49,981
42 ALL NEW ATOM #1 $2.99 DC 49,969

This was a GREAT first issue. The main character is interesting and likable, the supporting cast and situation was introduced quickly and without feeling forced, and there is enough of a hook to make me want the next issue. Highly recommended, and probably the best first issue from a new series in quite a long time.

43 JSA #87 $2.99 DC 49,583

Last issue, but it's not REALLY a last issue since it will come back with a new #1 in a couple of months.

44 DAREDEVIL #87 $2.99 MAR 49,436

Marvel's best super-hero series, ever thought there's very little in it that seems like a super-hero comic. The current story arc finishes up here as we seen Matt Murdock get out of prison, his secret identity is still a mess, and his life has been destroyed. It'll be interesting to see where they go from here, but the great thing about the book is that it makes sure you want to keep turning the pages to see what's next without worrying when they will go back to some sort of status quo. It reads like a great crime novel and is highly recommended.

45 INCREDIBLE HULK #96 $2.99 MAR 49,209

Continuing the “Planet Hulk” story, and it's been the best run of the Hulk in over five years. The story has enough action to be fun to read, but also shows an intelligent, nasty Hulk in a situation that readers haven't seen before. Well worth the money and highly recommended.

46 FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN #10 $2.99 MAR 48,902

Out of the mainline Spider-Man books, this one is the best, so I have no idea why it is the lowest selling. A solid mix of super-hero stuff and Peter Parker's personal life, which is what has made the Spider-Man stuff so popular through the years. This issue deals with Peter Parker's announcing he is Spider-Man and going back to his job, told with humor and ends with a nice action set-up. Highly recommended.

47 CAPTAIN AMERICA #20 $2.99 MAR 47,357

Continuing the great run this series has been on since restarting the numbering AGAIN. This story, set in London, continues with using Cap as almost the ultimate action/spy hero, and reads like a great big budget movie. A great super-hero comic and highly recommended.

48 SECRET SIX #2 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 47,346

I LOVED the Villains United mini-series that preceded this, and felt is was one of the most interesting uses of DC's minor villains since the beloved “Suicide Squad” of the late 80's. This mini-series, while good, lacks the same focus and isn't as tightly plotted. Hopefully, it will pick up a bit as it goes, but for now, it's just mildly recommended.

49 CIVIL WAR #2 (Of 7)* $2.99 MAR 46,108

Re-orders. Probably the most re-orders I have seen for any comic book. Marvel has got be giddy over sales like this, since this pushed #2 over the 350K mark.

50 SQUADRON SUPREME #5 $2.99 MAR 46,029
51 NIGHTWING #122 $2.99 DC 42,542

For those who thought the book couldn't possibly get worse than it was when Devin Greyson wrote stories about Nightwing so sex-addled that he allowed his girl-friend to off people or so dumb that he thought re-doing the plotline of Donnie Brasco crossed with All My Children was a good idea, I give you this comic.

Easily the worst thing I have ever read.

52 OUTSIDERS #38 $2.99 DC 41,974
53 SUPERGIRL & LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #20 $2.99 DC 41,679

This book continues to show that, when not treated like some pedophile's dream girl, Supergirl can be a fun character. This series could be one of the most complicated in the DC Universe, and instead it's a great example of making each issue seem like it could be someone's first. It's set 1000 years in the future, has a lot going on, a ton of characters, and still manages to ell stories that are fun, well done and make me want more. A great super-hero comic that I just kind of liked until the addition of Supergirl. Highly recommended.

54 UNCLE SAM & FREEDOM FIGHTERS #1 (Of 8) $2.99 DC 40,736
55 NEW X-MEN #28 $2.99 MAR 39,771

The death and mayhem continues. I have simply decided that this is Marvel's snuff comic, and they are using the book to show that they can kill of minor characters for no reason and no one will give a damn if the stories are bland enough. I was willing to give the creators time to sort out what they wanted to do on the book, but 10 issues later, it seems that they just want to shock constantly, which tends to become numbing and dull after a while.

56 ANNIHILATION SILVER SURFER #4 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 39,181

The last of the mini-series leading in the main Annihilation mini-series, and while the event as a whole is very good, this mini-series had a big shock as its ending, and if they don't undo it, will change a LOT of things about how this character is used. Normally, I don't like the Big Shock Ending style of storytelling unless there is something good to back it up. This had a good mini-series leading up to it, and has sold me on the crossover. Highly recommended.

57 MS MARVEL #5 $2.99 MAR 38,874

After a very strong first three issues, the book is drifting in it's story. Ms. Marvel has never been an interesting character on her own, and while she could be, no one has done anything worth reading outside of a team book. I'm giving it a few more issues to set its tone and give the book a solid direction, but for now it's just average.

58 CRISIS AFTERMATH SPECTRE #3 (Of 3) $2.99 DC 38,772

A solid conclusion for the mini-series, and it makes The Spectre a character I want to read more about, which is the job of an introductory mini-series. When it comes out as a trade, people who liked “Gotham Central” of all things should pick it up, and if it were to become a series, I'd buy it. Mildly recommended.

59 IRON MAN #10 $2.99 MAR 38,102
60 ROBIN #152 $2.99 DC 37,466
61 CRISIS AFTERMATH BATTLE FOR BLUDHAVEN #6 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 37,057

Speaking of crappy comics, this six issue mini-series is such a painful mess that I would imagine that everyone involved will be working hard to keep it off of their resume.

62 NEW EXCALIBUR #9 $2.99 MAR 36,466
63 SHADOWPACT #3 $2.99 DC 36,341

Three issues in, and we're at the end of the first story arc AND Bill Willing ham isn't drawing the book anymore? That's a good thing and a bad thing, since I am pretty tired of comic starting with a six part story just because it makes for a better trade, but Willingham's art was much better on the book. It's a decent enough super-hero team book, and hopefully Willingham will pull back on focusing so much on the main plot to develop these little known characters now. Mildly recommended.

64 GREEN ARROW #64 $2.99 DC 36,148

Before the”One Year Later” event, I was ready to drop this book, but it has turned itself around since that event and has finished up a solid super-hero action story featuring Deathstroke wherein Green Arrow beats him by being intelligent. A solid super-hero story and mildly recommended.

65 BEYOND #1 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 35,728

Let's be honest, is anyone out there clamoring for a return of the Secret Wars character “The Beyonder”? I couldn't work up interest in this mini-series, even thought its written by a decent writer. Didn't Secret Wars II scar enough people for life?

66 BLUE BEETLE #5 $2.99 DC 35,490
67 ANNIHILATION NOVA #4 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 35,194
68 CHECKMATE #4 $2.99 DC 34,661

A spy series set in a super-hero universe is an idea that has been done before, but Greg Rucka brings enough of a fresh eye to it that it's enjoyable. So far I've liked it, and since they are already doing shakeups to the cast, I doubt it will get stale any time soon. Mildly recommended.

69 PUNISHER #35 (MR) $2.99 MAR 34,116

I think if Garth Ennis wrote the Punisher for the rest of his life, there would be no way the character would get screwed up. Ennis knows how to write a solid action story, and keeps the plots interesting, knowing there's not a lot to be done with the lead character. A solid, dependable comic that always entertains. Mildly recommended.

70 WITCHBLADE #100* $4.99 IMA 33,832

Having about 7 different covers really helped this book, which has been selling about half as many copies as this. I read the first 25 or so, and lost interest pretty fast. Leafing through this issue, there's nothing here to bring me back as a reader, and having the lead character get pregnant seems like a desperation pass to try and get some interest in a book that most people forgot about 5 years ago.

71 JSA CLASSIFIED #14 $2.99 DC 33,832

Another story by Steve Englehart, who was one of the best comics writers of the 70's. It ties in with his JLA Classified story, but reads well on its own, breathing some life in the horribly bad “Detroit JLA” characters. A solid super-hero story that evokes a bit more nostalgia than it probably should and is mildly recommended.

72 ANNIHILATION SUPER SKRULL #4 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 33,593
73 STAR WARS LEGACY #2 $2.99 DAR 33,298
74 RED SONJA #12* $2.99 DE 33,252

Selling a bit more than normal due to Jim Lee and George Perez covers. This is a comic what has been propped up by special covers for a LONG time, and even now, it's settled in to selling around the same level as Conan. It's a decent enough sword and sorcery series, and is highly recommended for fans of that genre, and mildly recommended for everyone else.

75 CIVIL WAR DIRECTORS CUT #1 $4.99 MAR 32,878

A reprint of the first issue with some script pages and sketches. It would be nice if they actually went out of their way to MAKE these like a “Director's Cut” dvd, with deleted scenes and more “behind the scenes” stuff, but instead, it feels like an overpriced reprint. Pass on this and buy the regular reprint.

76 EXILES #84 $2.99 MAR 32,866

This series was going to be written by Chris Claremont, so the creative team wrapped up their plotlines...and then Claremont couldn't take over the comic, so they had to “vamp.” Luckily, they've decided to do so with a fun idea of having a team made up of Wolverines from different timelines. A great comic for people who are well versed in the Marvel Universe, but confusing as hell to those who aren't.

77 BIRDS OF PREY #96 $2.99 DC 32,219
78 ANNIHILATION RONAN #4 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 31,719
79 JLA CLASSIFIED #24 $2.99 DC 31,697
80 CONAN #30 (MR) $2.99 DAR 31,095
81 JLA CLASSIFIED #25 $2.99 DC 30,709
82 AQUAMAN SWORD OF ATLANTIS #43 $2.99 DC 30,584

I gave it a try, but even with Kurt Busiek's new take on Aquaman, the painfully stiff art by Jackson Guice has made the comic unreadable. Sorry.

83 SHE-HULK 2 #9 $2.99 MAR 29,902

With the previous “Civil War” tie-in selling for major money on eBay, this comic is getting some well-deserved attention. The series has a reputation for being a humor book, and while there are a lot of funny scenes, the plot is starting to take a more serious turn, and I'm interested in where it's going. Dan Slott has created a great cast of characters around She-Hulk and is doing stories that remind readers why its fun to know about the Marvel Universe, rather than it being a chore to remember all the trivia involved. Highly recommended for the fun of it.

84 BATMAN SECRETS #5 (Of 5) $2.99 DC 27,949
85 CATWOMAN #57 $2.99 DC 27,302
86 JACK OF FABLES #1 (MR) $2.99 DC 27,097

A strong showing for the spin-off series from “Fables”. This time I'm going to buy ti as trades, as the “Fables” series works so much better in trades, but I have been buying it as single issues.

87 Y THE LAST MAN #47 (MR) $2.99 DC 25,791
88 TRANSFORMERS INFILTRATION #6 $2.99 IDW 25,303
89 HAWKGIRL #54 $2.99 DC 25,201

Sales on this book are just about down to where they were before the changed the book. I am still liking Chaykin's cheesecake art and Simonson's stories, but I seem to a minority. I still recommend it. So there.

90 CONAN & SONGS OF THE DEAD #1 (Of 5) $2.99 DAR 25,144
91 FABLES #51 (MR) $2.99 DC 25,087
92 RUNAWAYS #18 $2.99 MAR 24,678
93 TRANSFORMERS STORMBRINGER #1 (Of 4) $2.99 IDW 24,542
94 ASTRO CITY SAMARITAN SP $3.99 DC 24,394

Astro City is one of those books that I love, but it comes out so infrequently that I can't see buying it as single issues when the trades are a better read. I know that Busiek says it's harder to write stories for this series, but scheduling problems have pretty much killed off the sales on single issues.

95 BATMAN LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #208 $2.99 DC 23,974
96 STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC #7 $2.99 DAR 23,531
97 LAST PLANET STANDING #5 (Of 5) $2.99 MAR 23,486

This mini-series set in Tom DeFalco's odd little “future universe” that reads like 80's Marvel comics. No one is ever going to pick up one of these books and declare it a work of art, but if you've got a soft spot for 80's Marvel, this is a good re-creation of it. Mildly recommended.

98 STAR WARS REBELLION #4 $2.99 DAR 23,156
99 POWERS #19 (MR) $2.95 MAR 23,156

Powers is a book that I tend to forget about, since I read it in story arcs and large doses. It started as a super-hero/police procedural, but has grown into an interesting super-hero universe of its own, with some of the most interesting characters in comics. It's one of those comics that doesn't rest on its past successes and takes a lot of chances with each story. Highly recommended.

100 NEXT #1 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 22,713
101 SPIDER-GIRL #100 $3.99 MAR 22,691

This was GOING to be the last issue, but instead, there series is starting over in a couple of months with a new #1. I'm sure it will get a little bit of notice, but it's not like this comic has changed a lot. It's set in the “future Marvel Universe” Tom DeFalco has created, and reads like a typical 80's comic book with fight scenes, bland villains and soap opera underpinnings. It's a nice disposable little comic that would be a lot more fun if it were cheaper. Mildly recommended.

102 ESCAPISTS #1 (Of 6) $1.00 DAR 21,748
103 STORM #6 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 21,510
104 TRANSFORMERS EVOLUTIONS HEARTS OF STEEL #1 $2.99 IDW 20,533
105 WALKING DEAD #29 (MR) $2.99 IMA 20,385

Still the best horror comic on the stands, and a comic that non-horror fans will like as well. The series has taken a sharp turn into new territory after seemingly setting up a status quo over the last year or so, and it makes me wish they could get the comic out sooner. Highly recommended.

106 JONAH HEX #9 $2.99 DC 20,385
107 THING #8 $2.99 MAR 20,363

Last issues, and a damn shame. This has been one of Marvel's best books, and had a great mix of super-hero action, solid plotting and good character work. It read like a new version of the comics of the 70's, without being filled with purple prose and silly plot twists. It was a great super-hero comic and is highly recommended.

108 XENA #1* $3.50 DE 20,328

Didn't much care for the campy TV show, so I can't imagine that I'd like the comic. And, since it's from Dynamic Entertainment, there are a lot of different covers to choose from.

109 ALL NEW OFF HANDBOOK MARVEL UNIVERSE A TO Z #7 $3.99 MAR 20,124
110 PLANET HULK GLADIATOR GUIDEBOOK $3.99 MAR 20,022

While I'm liking “Planet Hulk”, the fact that they need to put out a 32 page book that has text at a TINY font to work in the backstories of all of the different alien races and characters shows that there is such a thing as too much information. The good thing is, you don't need any of this to know what's going on in the main book.

111 FIRESTORM NUCLEAR MAN #27 $2.99 DC 19,772
112 STREET FIGHTER II #4* $2.95 UDO 19,136
113 WOLVERINE ORIGINS DIRECTORS CUT (PP #718) $3.99 MAR 18,432
114 X-MEN FAIRY TALES #3 (Of 4) $2.99 MAR 18,103
115 MARVEL TEAM-UP #22 $2.99 MAR 17,944

Ending with issue #25, and a damn shame, since this was a great super-hero comic. It was a unique format, since it followed a story instead of a specific hero, and would put together big event-type stories in each story arc. The current story arc isn't as good as the earlier ones, but still solid super-hero reading. Mildly recommended.

116 SPAWN #158 $2.95 IMA 17,728

I think this is the lowest Spawn has ever charted, and a few years ago (when it was running over a year late), it was selling 5 times this many copies. Unless they do something soon to get people interested again, this book will continue to drop like a rock.

117 FANTASTIC FOUR FIRST FAMILY #5 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 16,921
118 SUPERMAN RETURNS MOVIE ADAPTATION $6.99 DC 16,831

Again, is there any need for this when the DVD will be out before Thanksgiving?

119 GI JOE AMERICAS ELITE #13 CVR A* $2.95 DDP 16,751
120 NEIL GAIMANS NEVERWHERE #8 (Of 9) (MR) $2.99 DC 16,592
121 FURY PEACEMAKER #6 (Of 6) $3.50 MAR 16,581

I thought this mini-series would do better, since it's Garth Ennis writing WWII stories. Most of the old Sgt. Fury stories of the 60's and 70's were super-hero stories dressed as war comics, but this one attempts to tell a serious story using the characters, and Ennis is one of the few writers in comics who can tell a great war story. I'll buy it as a trade.

122 BPRD UNIVERSAL MACHINE #4 (Of 5) $2.99 DAR 16,024
123 ARES #5 (Of 5) $2.99 MAR 15,786
124 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #533 CW $2.99 MAR 15,752
125 CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #2 (Of 10) $2.99 MAR 15,650

Both this and Amazing S-M 533 are re-orders. So that whole Civil War thing seems to be a hit.

126 MAN CALLED KEV #1 (Of 5) (MR) $2.99 DC 15,547
127 MAN-BAT #4 (Of 5) $2.99 DC 15,502

Bruce Jones is a writer who, when he's on target, he's very good, and when he isn't, you get this.

128 ARMY OF DARKNESS #9* $2.99 DE 15,491
129 WOLVERINE #42 CW* $2.99 MAR 15,093
130 CIVIL WAR #1 (Of 7)* $3.99 MAR 15,002
131 BATTLER BRITTON #1 (Of 5) $2.99 DC 14,843
132 WARLORD #6 $2.99 DC 14,786

Canceled, maybe even with this issue. Warlord was one of my favorite comics when Mike Grell either wrote or drew it, but this series just wasn't very good, and Bart Sears's art was REALLY bad.

133 DMZ #9 (MR) $2.99 DC 14,786
134 MANHUNTER #24 $2.99 DC 14,650

About to “take a break” and then come back for 5 issues after some publicity and hype, talking about how this will be the start of DC's next big crossover event. So, I'll give it a try then, since the character and concept just didn't appeal to me when the book came out.

135 LOVELESS #9 (MR) $2.99 DC 14,434

I REALLY want to support Westerns, not because I am a big fan of the genre, but because I like it when mainstream comics companies try to tell stories other than super-heroes, but after reading the trade paperback of this, it's just not a very good series.

136 SHE-HULK 2 #8 CW* $2.99 MAR 14,241
137 BITE CLUB VAMPIRE CRIME UNIT #4 (Of 5) (MR) $2.99 DC 14,162
138 HELLBLAZER #222 (MR) $2.99 DC 13,912
139 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #532 CW* $2.99 MAR 13,560
140 JACK KIRBYS GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTERS #1 $3.99 MAR 13,514

I knew this wasn't going to sell well, and there was a 50/50 chance on it being good, since it's based on some of the MANY character concepts Kirby left after his passing that he never got to use. This first issue, however is good. It has Kibry-ish art, but the story reads like an old-fashioned action comic, with tons of new ideas and characters being thrown at the reader, but not in such a way that it gets confusing. I read through the book quickly, and by the end I wanted to read more. It's steeped in nostalgia, but it's a great little comic and is highly recommended.

141 NEW AVENGERS ILLUMINATI SP* $3.99 MAR 13,333
142 AMERICAN VIRGIN #5 (MR) $2.99 DC 13,265
143 100 BULLETS #74 (MR) $2.99 DC 13,265
144 RUSH CITY #1 (Of 6) $2.99 DC 13,083

The idea behind this mini-series is that it's an action comic to promote a new car model. It's presumably being given away in car dealerships, and after looking at it, it reminds me of why comics rarely do “action/adventure” well, since car chases are cool on a movie screen, and in a comic they usually just look like drawings of cars. There's nothing here that you can't get better in a low-budget action movie being shown on TBS this weekend.

145 SHAOLIN COWBOY #6* $3.50 BUR 12,776
146 THUNDERBOLTS #103 CW* $2.99 MAR 12,765
147 CYBERFORCE #4 $2.99 IMA 12,470
148 FANTASTIC FOUR #538 CW $2.99 MAR 12,049
149 BLOOD OF THE DEMON #17 $2.99 DC 11,936

Last issue, and the combination of a lackluster “back to basics” approach to a minor character, as well as the creative team's decision to go out of their way to write every issue continued (making it impossible to collect in the standard trade format) doomed it.

150 HAUNT OF HORROR EDGAR ALLAN POE #3 (Of 3) (MR) $3.99 MAR 11,561

Reprinting Corbin's Poe work from the old Warren Mags is a good thing, but why they did it as a mini-series instead of just directly to trade surprises me.

151 GOON #18 $2.99 DAR 11,504
152 CLAW THE UNCONQUERED #2 $2.99 DC 11,470

Already canceled. We are now pretty sure that there isn't a “sword and sorcery” boom. Claw wasn't all that interesting when he was created in the 70's, and the mini-series with Red Sonja didn't convince me otherwise.

153 ELEPHANTMEN #1 $2.99 IMA 11,277
154 DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON #6 (Of 6) $2.99 MAR 11,164

I WANTED to like this comic, but in the end, I just lost interest due tot he convoluted plot. Hopefully the follow-up “Heroes For Hire” will be a bit clearer in what is going on, and the arts will be better at making the action sequences easy to follow.

155 TRANSFORMERS GENERATIONS (IDW) #5 $2.49 IDW 11,141
156 SPIKE VS DRACULA #4 (Of 5) $3.99 IDW 11,095
157 TESTAMENT #8 (MR) $2.99 DC 11,073
158 ROKKIN #1 $2.99 DC 10,846
159 GIRLS #15 (MR) $2.99 IMA 10,778

Still one of the best comics on the stands, a horror comic that is able to maintain a sense of dread without a lot of unnecessary gore. The art by the Luna Brothers is the highlight of the series and shows their still in drawing normal people in abnormal situations. The first half of the story is collected in a pair of trades, and while the whole 24 issues will eventually be in four books, I buy it weekly just to know what is going to happen next. Highly recommended.

160 EXTERMINATORS #7 (MR) $2.99 DC 10,743
161 TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE GRIND #3 (Of 3) (MR)* $3.99 AVA 10,596

Last issue before it goes to DC, which won't have as much gore and nudity, but the stories will pretty much be the same. Am I the only person who thinks they should have just left it with the first movie?

162 TEEN TITANS GO #33 $2.25 DC 10,516
163 SIMPSONS COMICS #120 $2.99 BON 10,323

The best TV series related comic ever, and each issue is more fun than an average episode of the TV show now. Highly recommended.

164 JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLTD #23 $2.25 DC 10,255
165 TAROT WITCH OF THE BLACK ROSE #39 (MR) $2.95 BRO 9,528

170 STRANGERS IN PARADISE #83 $2.95 ABS 8,870
171 ELFQUEST DISCOVERY #4 (Of 4) $3.99 DC 8,836
172 NIGHTMARE OF ELM ST FEARBOOK #1 (MR)* $3.99 AVA 8,733
173 MARVEL WESTERNS KID COLT & ARIZONA GIRL $3.99 MAR 8,597

All of the “Marvel Westerns” were fun comics, with a new lead story and three reprints of late 50's/early 60's Marvel westerns by Kirby or Heck. The leads stories are solid one issue stories that read like 70's or 80's Marvel book, no big revisionist stuff there, and for the price, you get a lot of decent reading. Mildly recommended as a nostalgia kick.

174 AMERICAN WAY #6 (Of 8) $2.99 DC 8,540
175 MANIFEST ETERNITY #2 $2.99 DC 8,415
176 NEW AVENGERS #21 CW $2.99 MAR 8,347
177 FRANKLIN RICHARDS SON OF GENIUS SPR SMMR SPCTCLR $2.99 MAR 8,324

I wish this comic sold better! A humor comic from Marvel with Franklin Richards being used as a mischievous kid who drags his pet robot into trouble. Each story is able to get a laugh, and it's truly an all ages book, with stories that appeal to adults, but are fun enough to be enjoyed by kids. It reads like “Calvin and Hobbes” in the Marvel Universe and would be a great comic to buy, read and then give to a kid you know. Highly recommended.

178 MARVEL WESTERNS WESTERN LEGENDS $3.99 MAR 8,268
179 SKYE RUNNER #3 $2.99 DC 8,165
180 SAVAGE DRAGON #0 $1.95 IMA 8,165

Reprinting the story from the 4 years late, uber-expensive Image hardcover that gives all of the backstory of Savage Dragon. There's really nothing here that would interest a casual reader, so it's for fans only.

181 BATMAN STRIKES #23 $2.25 DC 8,154
182 FUTURAMA COMICS #26 $2.99 BON 8,143

Until the “made for DVD” stuff starts coming out, this is the only place to get new Futurama stories, and they are just as good as the TV series episodes. A sharp, funny and satiric comic, it's highly recommended.

183 TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE FEARBOOK #1* $3.99 AVA 7,984
184 OCCULT CRIMES TASKFORCE #1 (Of 4) (MR) $2.99 IMA 7,916

187 BEARERS OF THE BLADE SP $2.99 IMA 7,745
188 SIMPSONS SUPER SPECTACULAR #3 $2.99 BON 7,688

Delving into more “comic book” style stories, it's still as good if not better than an average episode of the TV series, and is highly recommended.

189 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #164 $2.25 ARC 7,609
190 SUPERMAN BATMAN #25 2ND PTG $2.99 DC 7,143
191 SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE #8 $2.99 MAR 6,769
192 RIVAL SCHOOLS #2* $4.95 UDO 6,678
193 DCU BRAVE NEW WORLD #1 $1.00 DC 6,553

This came out a few months ago, and while the story as a whole is a grand mess, as a way to get a decent preview of 6 of DC's new books,

194 SHE DRAGON #1 $5.99 IMA 6,439
195 SNAKEWOMAN #1 $2.99 VIR 6,360
196 CASANOVA #2 (MR) $1.99 IMA 6,337

198 RED STAR SWORD OF LIES $4.50 ARC 6,269
199 GRIMM FAIRY TALES #7 $2.99 ZEN 6,212
200 ART OF THE WITCHBLADE ONE SHOT $2.99 IMA 6,133
201 MARVEL ADVS SPIDER-MAN #17 $2.99 MAR 6,133

I picked this up because Peter David was writing it, and while it's not my cuppa tea, it is a decent comic that would appeal to younger readers who would be horribly confused by the endless backstory in the main Spider-Man comic. So, it's recommended for younger readers.

202 X-FACTOR #8 CW $2.99 MAR 6,019

209 MARVELS GREATEST COMICS FANTASTIC FOUR #52 $2.99 MAR 5,531

While I'd never say reprinting an issue of the Fantastic Four by Kirby is a bad idea, I am a bit baffled as to why this issue got reprinted. It's after the four best issues of the FF by Kirby (The Galactus Trilogy and the issue afterwards)and starts a new series of stories. Hate to say it, but unless you have a burning desire for it, just pick up the Essential FF instead.

210 CRYPTICS #1 $3.50 IMA 5,383
211 FEAR AGENT #6 (RES) $2.99 IMA 5,213
212 KNIGHTS OF THE DINNER TABLE #116 $4.99 KZR 5,167

Still good, month in, month out. Hard to say anything new about it.

213 WASTELAND #1 (MR) $2.99 ONI 4,952
214 ETERNALS #1 (Of 6)* $3.99 MAR 4,940
215 INNOCENTS #1 $2.99 IMA 4,906
216 GUMBY #1 $3.99 WIL 4,883

Gumby isn't a character I think of when I think of really strong entertainment. The cartoons are more interesting because of HOW they are made than the stories themselves. The comics are a MUCH different story, with the amazing creative team of Bob Burden (of Flaming Carrot fame) and Rick Geary (National Lampoon artist) creating a story that is fun enough for kids, but wonderfully strange enough that adults will probably like it more. Inventive, creative and my favorite comic of the month.

217 CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #1 (Of 10) $2.99 MAR 4,872
218 SCOOBY DOO #110 $2.25 DC 4,781

222 MARVEL ADVS FANTASTIC FOUR #14 $2.99 MAR 4,668
223 GODLAND #12 $2.99 IMA 4,611

I buy it in trade paperbacks, and it is one of my favorite books, with Neo-Kirby art and a story that works on the level of sheer creativity, this is a comic like nothing else on the stands, and shows that really creative folks can use comics for stories that just don't work in any other medium. Don't try to jump in cold, pick up the two trades, you'll love them. Highly recommended.

236 SADHU #1 $2.99 VIR 3,929
237 MOUSE GUARD #1* $3.50 ARS 3,918

Most of the re-orders on the list are either DC first issues or Marvel Civil War stuff. This is a quiet little Indy that reminds me a lot of “Watership Down.” It looks at first glance like a “cute animal” comic, it is more like a fantasy novel where mice have a culture all their own, but still deal with the threats they would in our world. An inventive comic that reads like a great fantasy novel and is highly recommended.

238 SCARLET TRACES GREAT GAME #1 (Of 4) (RES) $2.99 DAR 3,850

240 TASK FORCE ONE #1 (MR) $3.50 IMA 3,759
241 HATE ANNUAL #6 (MR) $4.95 FAN 3,748

Yeah, technically, it's an annual, but really it's the continuation of the 90's humor series by Peter Bagge. While Hate was one of the best comics of the 90['s, the annuals have been subject to the law of diminishing returns, with each successive issue become more and more routine. The plot of this issue actually reads like a slightly twisted sit-com, and inspired few laughs. Skip this and read the early stuff.

266 SECOND WAVE WAR OF THE WORLDS #4 $2.99 BOO 2,578
267 STARSHIP TROOPERS #4 (Of 4)* $3.50 MAR 2,567

I hate to kick series while they are down, but doing a comic book sequel to a 10 year old movie that wasn't that big a success anyway seems like a waste of paper to me. When they couldn't even get a movie sequel into theaters, there's just not a lot of interest.

279 COBB OFF LEASH #2 $3.99 IDW 2,044

This is a well done action series that is actually written as a comic book action series, rather than someone's old screenplay dusted off and passed off as a comic. Beau Smith is great at building characters who fit in the mold of an action hero, and the story is just enough for the 3 issue format. The art makes a few miss-steps, and the price is pretty steep, but the story is well worth picking up. Mildly recommended.
