The Top 300 Selling Comic Books for June 2005

This list comes from digging through sales figures, asking too many questions and using Diamond Comics information. The snotty comments in white are from deep in Cory's sick twisted little brain. It's only partial, and Cory!! may go back and fill in the rest of the comments, but don't count on it. He's going to concentrate on making sure that he keeps up from now on, rather than deal with ones he didn't have time for when work crushed his tiny little soul.

1 HOUSE OF M #1 (OF 8)* $2.99 MAR 233,763
2 HOUSE OF M #2 (OF 8)* $2.99 MAR 168,974

It’s the Big Summer Crossover From Marvel!! And it reads like Age of Apocalypse without all of the shitty art and endless X-Men wankery. It’s moving slowly, and hasn’t grabbed me yet, since there isn’t anything in it yet that makes it more than another “What If…?” type crossover. But, we’ll see.

3 NEW AVENGERS #6* $2.25 MAR 161,575

Finishing up the first story arc, and while I still think it jumped around too much, they did give a new reason for the team to be together, and so far, it’s been a solid super-hero read.

4 GREEN LANTERN #2 $2.99 DC 117,816

DC has to be happy that this re-launch is still doing so well. Even without shiny covers and such, the book is succeeding. It’s not Groundbreaking or anything NEW about the character, just entertaining super-hero stories, told well.

89 SPAWN #147 (RES) $2.50 IMA 27,495
90 CONAN & THE JEWELS OF GWAHLUR #3 (OF 3) $2.99 DAR 27,327
91 NEW THUNDERBOLTS #9 $2.99 MAR 27,300
92 GI JOE AMERICAS ELITE #1 $2.95 DEV 27,152

Another brand new GI Joe series for me to ignore.

93 BATGIRL #65 $2.50 DC 26,796
94 BATMAN VILLAINS SECRET FILES 2005 $4.99 DC 26,762
95 Y THE LAST MAN #34 (MR) $2.99 DC 26,756
96 WOLVERINE SOULTAKER #5 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 26,742

I didn’t think I would EVER see the days when a Wolverine mini-series would sell this poorly. Part of it is that they have milked this cow dry, and part is because there’s just no need to read these mini-series, because they are SO self-contained that nothing happens.

97 ORORO BEFORE THE STORM #1 (OF 4) $2.99 MAR 26,372
98 BATMAN LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #192 $2.50 DC 26,211

The editor for this comic needs to be smacked around with a large dead fish for running a SECOND Mr. Freeze story right after the first Mr. Freeze story. Especially since ALL Mr. Freeze stories are pretty much following the same plot. I might have liked it if it wasn’t so close to the last one.

99 OMAC PROJECT #1* $2.50 DC 25,882
100 X-MEN UNLIMITED #9 $2.99 MAR 25,398
101 BATMAN ALLIES SECRET FILES 2005 $4.99 DC 24,941
102 FABLES #38 (MR) $2.75 DC 24,813
103 ARMY OF DARKNESS SHOP TIL YOU DROP DEAD #3 $2.99 DYN 24,638

The second or third mini-series of this property, and it’s doing quite well for a tie-in, and one that actually adds to the story. I’m buying it when they collect it, but they are smart enough to make us wait a few months before putting out the collected version.

104 CABLE DEADPOOL #16 $2.99 MAR 24,612 105 BATMAN JEKYLL & HYDE #3 (OF 6) $2.99 DC 24,336 106 YEAR ONE BATMAN SCARECROW #2 (OF 2) $5.99 DC 24,228 107 DAY OF VENGEANCE #2* $2.50 DC 23,819 108 MARVEL TEAM-UP #9 $2.25 MAR 23,530

I’m surprised this comic is selling so poorly. I bet if they had called it “The Defenders” it would have sold MUCH better, since it is a version of the “Non-team” concept of super-heroes working together

109 STORMBREAKER SAGA OF BETA RAY BILL #6 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 22,649
110 MARVEL NEMESIS IMPERFECTS #2 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 22,407

Oh, that’s where this series came from. It’s a tie-in to a video game. If I ignore it, it will go away in four more issues.

111 NIGHTCRAWLER #7 $2.99 MAR 22,400

I love this comic, but it seems that I’m the only one. Even after a break to try and drum up some sales, it still hangs around down here in the land of soon to be cancelled by Marvel. Still, it’s the first issue of a new storyline, so give it a try and see that not ALL X-Men solo books have to suck.

112 EX MACHINA #12 (MR) $2.99 DC 22,004

Highly recommended, this is one of the few books to put a new spin on super-heroes without getting creepily adult. The political side of the stories is great for a wonk like me, and the super-hero stuff is not overwhelming, so a non-comics fan could really like it.

113 OFF HANDBK MARVEL UNIVERSE FANTASTIC FOUR 2005 $3.99 MAR 21,970
114 STAR WARS GENERAL GRIEVOUS #3 (OF 4) $2.99 DAR 21,782

Hey, you can get the back story on the robot that was in about 10 minutes of the latest Star Wars movie. Someone explain to me why I should give a flying rat’s ass, OK?

115 CATWOMAN #44 $2.50 DC 21,574

In the past few months, I have lost all interest in this series. Partly because Paul Gulacy left and partly because the story has been going nowhere for the last six months or so.

116 ASTONISHING X-MEN #10* $2.99 MAR 21,312
117 HAWKMAN #41 $2.50 DC 21,238
118 NEW WARRIORS #1 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 20,841

Ouch. That can’t be good. A new series featuring the characters just falls flat on it’s face. I guess we won’t see a second one.

119 STAR WARS REPUBLIC #76 $2.99 DAR 20,653 1
20 GRAVITY #1 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 20,304
121 ROGUE #12 $2.99 MAR 20,290

Last issue. How many series featuring Rogue have I ignored?

122 DAREDEVIL REDEMPTION #5 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 19,658

After reading the whole thing (I’m late. Big deal. It’s not like you people are fooking paying me) this series was OK enough, but the main plot was so clichéd I knew what was coming next, with only a few grisly differences. A “Lifetime” movie with super-heroes and art that I liked.

123 GAMBIT #11 $2.99 MAR 19,652
124 SPIDER-GIRL #87 $2.99 MAR 19,605

I don’t care, I like this comic. It reads like one of the better Marvel books of the 80’s with super-hero soap opera and art by people who know how to tell a story in a non-flashy way. A nice read for super-hero fans and mildly recommended.

125 AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #9 (OF 12) (MR) $2.99 DC 19,329

Remember when “The Authority” was one of DC’s best selling comics? They do too, which is why they keep trying to find some way to sell the book. Remember when it was one of their best? DC doesn't seem to figure out hwo to do that either.

126 TOP COW TRIPLE PLAY $0.99 IMA 19,275
127 BATMAN BEGINS MOVIE ADAPTATION $6.99 DC 18,939

More expensive than the Marvel adaptation, and still cheaper than a movie ticket…but you will be able to get the DVD used for less in 12 months at Blockbuster.

128 GAMBIT #12 $2.99 MAR 18,852 129 DISTRICT X #14 $2.99 MAR 18,798

Last issues for both of these series, neither of which got a lot of attention. District X was a well done series that traded on the idea that there would be Mutant ghettos and they would have mutant cops patrolling them. For the first time EVER it made Bishop an interesting character, and had great writing. Gambit was utter shite. And it sold a bit better. I can’t explain these things, I just point them out.

130 ALBION #1 (OF 6) $2.99 DC 18,791
131 AQUAMAN #31 $2.50 DC 18,402
132 NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET SP #1* $3.99 AVA 18,402
133 FIRESTORM #14 $2.50 DC 18,375
134 X-FORCE SHATTERSTAR #4 (OF 4) $2.99 MAR 18,066

Dear Rob Liefeld: Does this prove to you that no one cares what you draw anymore?

135 AUTHORITY LOBO SPRING BREAK MASSACRE (MR) $4.99 DC 17,864
136 FANTASTIC FOUR THE MOVIE #1 $4.99 MAR 17,481

Buy the comic! It’s less than seeing the movie and almost as much as the used DVD will be at Blockbuster in about 9 months!

137 VILLAINS UNITED #1* $2.50 DC 17,367
138 TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE SP #1* $3.99 AVA 17,299

If one person can explain to me why an adaptation of a 30 year old movie makes any sense, I’d love to smile and nod while thinking “You’re a complete basket case, aren’t you?”

139 WALKING DEAD #19 (MR) $2.95 IMA 17,225

The first and best in the new “Zombie” Genre. Writer Robert Kirkman knows that you have to build characters and not just throw a lot of shocks and gore at the reader. Well done, and highly recommended.

140 GOTHAM CENTRAL #32 $2.50 DC 16,694

Love this comic. The current story is one of the better ones, and it does involve bringing in more of the super-hero element, but it’s still told from the police’s point of view. Highly recommended.

141 FANTASTIC FOUR FOES #5 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 16,526
142 HERCULES #3 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 16,459
143 SON OF VULCAN #1 (OF 6) $2.99 DC 16,453

These three mini-series just show that the day of putting out a mini-series to see if people are interested in minor characters are long dead. Sales just don’t justify it any more.

144 ARANA HEART OF THE SPIDER #5 $2.99 MAR 16,379
145 BLOOD OF THE DEMON #4 $2.50 DC 16,311

This one is just DRAWN by Byrne, but it still isn’t selling. DC, are you listening to the sales figures or does Byrne of a picture of Paul Levitz in bed with a goat?

146 DARKNESS VAMPIRELLA ONE SHOT* $2.99 IMA 16,278
147 MONSTER WAR TOMB RAIDER VS WOLF MEN #2 (OF 4) $2.99 IMA 16,237
148 WITCHBLADE #86 $2.99 IMA 15,915
149 FANTASTIC FOUR FOES #6 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 15,713

A decent enough mini-series, and it was intended to cash in on the FF Movie, but it looks like no one is all that interested.

150 AMAZING FANTASY #9 $2.99 MAR 15,606
151 SPIDER MAN HUMAN TORCH #5 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 15,512

A nice light little series showing the relationship of the two characters over the years. It would probably appeal to long-time comics fans as well as kids, and will be a nice little trade paperback within a few weeks.

152 ANGEL THE CURSE #1 (OF 5) $3.99 IDW 15,357
153 DOOM PATROL #13 $2.50 DC 15,290

I wonder who John Byrne will blame the failure of THIS series on…retailers who don’t want to make money or fans who don’t know what’s good for them. Why is it I see Byrne as one of the those guys who sits on his lawn, yelling at people as they walk by?

154 HELLBLAZER #209 (MR) $2.75 DC 15,149
155 MAJESTIC #6 $2.99 DC 14,927
156 DARKSTALKERS #6* $2.95 DEV 14,907
157 SOLO #5 $4.99 DC 14,262

I think they have already lost sight of what this comic should be. I thought it was supposed to be an artist working SOLO, and this issue has an artist few Americans have heard of working with a BUNCH of different writers. Kind of defeats the purpose of calling the book “Solo”, don’t you think?

158 OTHERWORLD #4 (OF 12) (MR) $2.99 DC 14,214
159 TEEN TITANS GO #20 $2.25 DC 14,114
160 MANHUNTER #11 $2.50 DC 14,040
161 DC SPECIAL THE RETURN OF DONNA TROY #1 (OF 4) $2.99 DC 12,951
162 VIMANARAMA #3 (OF 3) (MR) $2.99 DC 12,729

I would have thought this would have either sold a LOT better or much worse. A strange little comic that I loved, even though each issue was a complete shift in theme. The bi-monthly schedule didn’t help it much, as I lost track of the plot between 2 and 3, but read as a whole, it’s inventive, powerfully drawn and highly recommended.

163 OMAC PROJECT #2 SECOND PTG $2.50 DC 12,696
164 SHAOLIN COWBOY #3 $3.50 BUR 12,386
165 CAPTAIN AMERICA #6* $2.99 MAR 12,292
166 RANN THANAGAR WAR #1* $2.50 DC 12,050
167 TOM STRONG #33 $2.99 DC 11,956

I love this comic…and this is a story by Michael Moorcock of all people. BUY THE DAMN THING ALREADY!!

168 BOOKS OF MAGICK LIFE DURING WARTIME #12 (MR) $2.75 DC 11,896
169 SIMPSONS COMICS #107 $2.99 BON 11,835

Always excellently done, and better than the last few years of the TV series have been. Highly recommended.

170 DOC FRANKENSTEIN #3 $3.50 BUR 11,788
171 LUCIFER #63 (MR) $2.75 DC 11,694
172 JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #10 $2.25 DC 11,634

Just what about it is unlimited? The number of characters? The way they keep hazing Aquaman? The number of times they show it on the Cartoon Network?

173 INVINCIBLE #23 $2.95 IMA 11,452
174 CITY OF HEROES #2 $2.99 IMA 11,405
175 SWAMP THING #16 (MR) $2.99 DC 10,962

They still publish this? You’re kidding, right?

176 GIRLS #2 (MR) $2.95 IMA 10,740
177 CITY OF TOMORROW #3 (OF 6) (MR) $2.99 DC 10,505
178 GREEN LANTERN #1 $3.50 DC 10,363

Re-Orders. Haven’t you people have enough, yet?

179 SPELLBINDERS #4 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 10,189
180 STARDUST KID #1 (OF 5) $3.50 IMA 10,108

By J. M. DeMatties and Mike Ploog. A well-done fairy tale type story that will sell well in bookstores and be made into a movie by someone at some point.

181 SHAUN OF THE DEAD #1 (OF 4) $3.99 IDW 10,081
182 BATMAN STRIKES #10 $2.25 DC 10,048
183 LIVEWIRES #5 (OF 6) $2.99 MAR 9,960

I love Andy Warren’s stuff, and his work on Gen 13 was the ONLY time that comic was any good, but it sure seems that he can’t catch a break at Marvel. This comic had NO promotion, and shouldn’t have been aimed at the comic shop market anyway. I’m buying the trade, since I didn’t know about the book until the third issue.

184 INTIMATES #8 $2.99 DC 9,826
185 MACHINE TEEN #2 (OF 5) $2.99 MAR 9,812
186 MAN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN #2 (OF 4) $2.99 DAR 9,658

Yesh. That’s right. An adaptation of a movie that was DIRECT TO THE SCI FI CHANNEL. I like Bruce Campbell a lot, but that isn’t a good sign.

187 MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #1 $2.50 MAR 9,617
188 BREACH #6 $2.50 DC 9,255
189 FUTURAMA COMICS #20 $2.99 BON 9,241

The only way to get new stories, since FOX cancelled the series. Stupid FOX. Now it’s getting great ratings on the Cartoon Network, probably being watched by all of the people who had no idea it existed because FOX ran it at such stupid times. Oh, and the comic is really good, better than some of the TV series episodes.

190 STRANGERS I/PARADISE #74 $2.95 ABS 9,241
191 BRIAN PULIDOS MEDIEVAL LADY DEATH #4* $3.99 AVA 6,385
192 HUMAN RACE #3 (OF 7) $2.99 DC 9,234
193 JOHN CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER SPECIAL PAPA MIDNITE #5 (OF 5) $2.99 DC 9,120

Guess the movie didn’t help sales.

194 SHI JU NEN #4 (Of 4) $2.99 DAR 9,107
195 BART SIMPSON COMICS #24 $2.99 BON 9,080
196 BRIAN PULIDOS MEDIEVAL LADY DEATH #3* $3.99 AVA 9,033
197 FRANK MILLERS ROBOCOP #8 (Of 9) (MR)* $3.99 AVA 8,986

This is still coming out? I thought it finished up last year. Weird. Not that I give a damn, but it’s still weird.

198 MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #4 $2.50 MAR 8,878
199 LOSERS #25 (MR) $2.99 DC 8,791
200 CONCRETE HUMAN DILEMMA #6 (OF 6) (MR) $3.50 DAR 8,791

This should have sold better, but it was a black and white mini-series at $3.50 a pop, featuring a character who hadn’t been seen in comic shops for the past 5 years. The story was a bit too obvious, and I expect more subtlety from Paul Chadwick, but it was a nice way to get the characters back, do something interesting with them and see when they land. I recommend the eventual collection.

201 SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #150 $2.25 ARC 8,683

By FAR the highest selling Archie book. I’m amazed this comic does so well, since there really hasn’t been a big Sonic game is YEARS. It must have a solid fanbase that likes the stuff. I’m not part of it.

202 METAL GEAR SOLID #9 $3.99 IDW 8,535
203 TENTH DARKK DAWN ONE SHOT $4.99 IMA 8,414
204 MNEMOVORE #3 (OF 6) (MR) $2.99 DC 8,401
205 MARY JANE HOMECOMING #4 (OF 4) $2.99 MAR 8,307

Marvel’s off-brand mini-series to try and break into the manga market sure tend to fall flat on their faces, sales-wise, don’t they?

206 POWER PACK #4 (OF 4) $2.99 MAR 8,307

And now off to the mini-trade paperback.

207 MATADOR #2 (OF 6) $2.99 DC 8,293
208 FANTASTIC FOUR DIRECTORS CUT #527 $3.99 MAR 8,092

The first issue by JMS, and while it was GOOD, these “Director’s cut” issues just strike me as a way to reprint the book with a lot of sketchbook stuff instead of added scenes and the like. An utterly unnecessary comic.

Reprinting issues 4 and 5 of this comic, which came out last year, before issue 6 comes out. Not that anyone will remember anything from the previous 5 issues.

227 MARVEL MILESTONES DR DOOM SUB-MARINER & RED SKULL $3.99 MAR 6,237
228 FLAMING CARROT COMICS #3 $3.50 IMA 6,008

I LOVE this comic. It’s a surrealist comic book, drawn in a style that reminds me of 50’s pin-ups crossed with Al Capp’s L’il Abner. Each issue of this comic is filled with absurdist humor, and I defy anyone to read an issue with being confused in a GOOD way, to laugh at least one, and to quit thinking about it for a few hours after you read it. Highly recommended.

Every month, I recommend this. This is no different.

237 CASTLEVANIA THE BELMONT LEGACY #4 (OF 5) $3.99 IDW 5,350
238 STRAY BULLETS #38 (MR) $3.50 EL 5,303

This is starting to come out more often, but I still prefer to read the big hardcovers of the book, since the pacing on it is deathly slow. It’s been almost 40 issues, and most of the strange things for early issues have not been explained yet. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good, just means it’s got slow pacing.

239 LULLABY WISDOM SEEKER #3 (OF 4) $2.95 IMA 5,229

256 BRIAN PULIDOS BELLADONNA #5 (OF 5)* $3.99 AVA 4,557
257 NOBLE CAUSES #11 $3.50 IMA 4,530

I buy this comic in the trade paperbacks, simply they are easier to deal with that way, but I don’t know how they can keep putting out a color comic with sales this low. It’s a good super-hero book, but at $3.50 a pop, it’s WAY overpriced.

258 BLACKLIGHT #1 $2.99 IMA 4,476
259 CSI SECRET IDENTITY #5 (OF 5) $3.99 IDW 4,375
260 FLAK RIOT #1 $2.95 IMA 4,369
261 MR T #1 $3.50 APC 4,301

I would pity the fool who didn’t buy this issue, but it would mean that I am pitying for the next 6 to 10 years. Does anyone still care about Mr. T? His comic back when he was popular didn’t sell, so I have no idea why this would. And you KNOW that if it would have been a hit, Gary Coleman would have a comic out within days.

262 MICKEY MOUSE & FRIENDS #278 $2.95 GEM 4,274
263 BRIAN PULIDOS WAR ANGEL #3 (OF 3)* $3.50 AVA 4,248
264 BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL #102 (MR) $2.99 DAR 4,248

One of the few Japanese comics still coming out as monthly comics issues. And with sales like this, I don’t know why they are still doing it.

281 ELSINORE #2 (OF 9) $2.99 ALI 3,360
282 ULTIMATE MARVEL FLIP MAGAZINE #1 $3.99 MAR 3,266
283 MARVEL SELECT FLIP MAGAZINE #1 $3.99 MAR 3,246

These aren’t for comic shops, and are yet another attempt by Marvel to get some sales outside the comics market. I hope they succeed, since it is pretty vital that comics get new readers. They are out there, as manga has shown, but they just don’t come into comic shops.

284 GRIMOIRE #4 $2.99 SPE 3,246
285 DRACULA VS KING ARTHUR #1 (OF 4) $2.95 SIL 3,213
286 SUPER MANGA BLAST #52 (MR) $5.99 DAR 3,071

With sales like this, I’m just kind of shocked this comic is still seeing print. It has a series of 5 different manga being serialized, all of which are worth reading, and each one gives you a nice “what has come before” to help you catch up. But still, only selling 3000 shows that anthologies just don’t sell to comic shop audiences.

287 POISON ELVES VENTURES #1 CASSANDRA #1 (MR) $3.50 SIR 3,058

294 LETHAL INSTINCT #2 (OF 6) $2.99 ALI 2,729
295 SMALL GODS #9 $2.95 IMA 2,708
296 SABRINA VOL 2 #67 $2.19 ARC 2,641

Drawn in a manga style now, so I’d be interested to see how it is doing outside of comics stores.

297 KARNEY #3 (OF 4) (MR) $3.99 IDW 2,621
298 SHONEN JUMP AUG 05 #32 $4.99 VIZ 2,594

Overall sales in comics are up, since usually the comic in this position is selling less than 1000 copies. However, most of the ones making this trend possible are re-orders of Big Mainstream Comics, so I don’t know how much of a positive this is.
